history

Appleton was organized as a Town on January 28, 1829. Previously the area was known as the Plantation of Appleton and appeared on first maps as early as 1786. Appleton was named after Nathaniel Appleton, who worked as an agent for Twenty Associates , the initial owners of the Appleton, Camden, Hope, Liberty and Montville areas.

In 1843 part of the Town Hope, the St. Georges River Valley, was added to the Appleton area. The Town Hall is located in the rooms of the former Village School, which now has new buildings.

There are no medical facilities or hospitals in Appleton. The closest are in Camden and Rockland.

In Appleton is the Mildred Stevens Williams Memorial Library , also called Appleton Library . Initially located at Appleton Village School, it is now located in a newly constructed building in Appleton in 2010. It was named after Mildred Stevens, whose husband was the principal of Appleton High School. Mildred Stevens died while her husband was on duty in World War I. Through donations and collections, other Navy wives, as well as the family, made the library possible.
