Rockland is a city in Knox County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 7,297 inhabitants in 3,423 households on an area of ​​33.26 km². Rockland is the Shire Town of Knox County.

history

The first settlers in the Rockland area were John Lermond and his brothers, who came from Warren. They set up a camp in 1767 and felled oak and pine. The area was named Lermonds Cove after them. The Indian name for the area was Catawamteak, which translated means large landing area . After the Lermonds had left the area again, European settlers settled again in 1769. They began to build log houses and reclaim land for agriculture. In 1795, John Ulmer founded his first plant for the extraction of lime.

On July 28, 1848, Rockland, then still under the name East Thomaston , was organized as a town. The name was changed to Rockhind in 1850 . In 1854 Rockland was organized as a City.
