Rockland is a city in Knox County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 7,297 inhabitants in 3,423 households on an area of 33.26 km². Rockland is the Shire Town of Knox County.

According to the United States Census Bureau , Rockland has a total area of 39.03 km², of which 33.26 km² are land and 5.78 km² are water .
Geographical location
City Rockland is located on the eastern part of mainland Knox County and has a natural harbor on Penobscot Bay . To the north, Chickawaukie Pond borders the Rockland area. The surface is slightly hilly, the highest point is the 200 m high Dodge Mountain on the western bank of Chickawaukie Pond.

history
The first settlers in the Rockland area were John Lermond and his brothers, who came from Warren. They set up a camp in 1767 and felled oak and pine. The area was named Lermonds Cove after them. The Indian name for the area was Catawamteak, which translated means large landing area . After the Lermonds had left the area again, European settlers settled again in 1769. They began to build log houses and reclaim land for agriculture. In 1795, John Ulmer founded his first plant for the extraction of lime.
On July 28, 1848, Rockland, then still under the name East Thomaston , was organized as a town. The name was changed to Rockhind in 1850 . In 1854 Rockland was organized as a City.

Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
The US Highway 1 runs north to south through Rockland and connects Rockland in the south with Portland.
Several rail and tram lines run or led through Rockland. Freight traffic is operated on the Central Maine and Quebec Railway , as well as on the Maine Eastern Railroad . There is also passenger traffic on the route in summer.
Public facilities
There are several medical facilities or hospitals in Rockland that also provide medical care to residents of the surrounding communities.
In Rockland, the Rockland Public Library is on Union Street. It was founded in the 1890s.

Rockland is part of Regional School Unit 13 along with Cushing, Owls Head, South Thomaston and Thomaston .
