Herbert Lord

Herbert Mayhew Lord (born December 6, 1859 in Rockland , Maine , †  June 2, 1930 ) was an American officer and the second director of the newly created Bureau of the Budget (term of office July 1, 1922 to May 31, 1929). Under US President Calvin Coolidge he was known for significant cuts in government spending, which enabled the US to run a budget surplus and reduce national debt.

After studying at Colby University in Waterville and changing jobs afterwards, he volunteered for the Spanish-American War . During this period he was accepted into the regular army as a professional soldier. During the First World War he was responsible for the finances of the Quartiermeisterei in Paris and then for the war ministry on the continent as a whole. With the rank of Brigadier General, he was retired in 1922 to succeed Charles Gates Dawes as director of the Bureau of the Budget.

Herbert Lord died the year after he left office and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
