Shaun Donovan

Shaun Donovan (born January 24, 1966 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 2009 to 2014 he was the building minister in the cabinet of US President Barack Obama ; then he took over the management of the Office of Management and Budget .

Career

Donovan graduated from Harvard University . There he received Masters degrees in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government and in Architecture from the Graduate School of Design . He then worked for the Community Preservation Corporation in New York, a non-profit organization that promoted the construction of affordable homes. During Bill Clinton's presidency , he worked as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Department of Construction, where he was responsible for apartment buildings. During this time he was also acting head of the Federal Housing Administration .

After joining the Bush administration , Donovan initially worked in the private sector before New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg made him head of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development in 2004 . On December 13, 2008, President-elect Barack Obama announced his nomination to succeed Building Secretary Steve Preston ; confirmation by the US Senate took place on January 22, 2009, after which Donovan was able to take office. On July 28, 2014, the former mayor of San Antonio , Julián Castro , succeeded Donovan as the new minister for housing and urban development. Instead, he took over the management of the Office of Management and Budget , which had been temporarily headed by Brian Deese after Sylvia Mathews Burwell moved to the Ministry of Health .

At the State of the Union Address in 2010, Donovan was a Designated Survivor . In the event of a fatal attack on the Capitol, he would have been the highest-ranking survivor and would have succeeded Barack Obama as president.
