Kermit Gordon (born 1916 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † June 21, 1976 in Washington, DC ) was an American economist and university professor who was also director of the Bureau of the Budget .

Life

After attending the High School of Upper Darby , he began in 1933 to study at Swarthmore College and graduated in 1938 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from. He then completed from 1938 to 1939 on a Rhodes scholarship at the University of Oxford and then postgraduate studies at Harvard University and did his military service in the US Army during the Second World War .

After the end of the war, he took over a professorship in economics at Williams College in Williamstown (Massachusetts) in 1946 and taught there until 1962. During this time, he was also a member of the Council of Economic Advisers from 1961 to 1962 . He was then director of the Bureau of the Budget between December 1962 and June 1965 and in this capacity also a member of the cabinets of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson . In 1963 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1971 to the American Philosophical Society .

After completing his work in government, he worked for the Brookings Institution between 1965 and his death in 1976 , but also for the State Department and the Ford Foundation at times . He was also Chairman of the Health Insurance Advisory Council from 1965 to 1967, a member of the Advisory Council on Social Security from 1968 to 1971 and a member of the Federal Pay Board from 1971 to 1972.

His correspondence and documents are in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum. Since 1985, in his honor, the Kermit Gordon Scholarships have been awarded to ten health care students from Berkshire County , each endowed with US $ 1,000 .
