Sylvia Mathews Burwell

Sylvia Mary Mathews Burwell (born June 23, 1965 in Hinton , West Virginia ) is an American politician and the first female president of the American University since 2017 .

Prior to that, she was the United States' 22nd Secretary of Health from 2014 to 2017 . 2013–2014 she was Director of the Office of Management and Budget .

She has been President of the Walmart Foundation since January 2012 and prior to that President of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Development Program . Their program focused on combating global poverty through agriculture development, financial services for the poor and global libraries. Prior to the Foundation's 2006 reorganization, she was Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director . She joined the Foundation in 2001 after serving as Assistant Director of the Office of Management and Budget in Washington, DC since 1998 .

Life

Mathews grew up in her native Hinton, West Virginia. She is the daughter of Cleo (nee Maroudas) Mathews, a former mayor of Hinton, and Dr. William Peter Mathews, a retired optician. Her maternal grandparents, Vasiliki (Mpakares) and Dennis N. Maroudas, were, like her paternal grandparents, Greek immigrants.

Training and career start

In 1982 she was an exchange student for Youth For Understanding in Japan . During her time at college she worked as an intern for Nick Rahall , a Congressman from West Virginia , as assistant of the governor of Massachusetts , Michael Dukakis , in the presidential campaign of Dukakis and Lloyd Bentsen in 1988 and later in the campaign for Bill Clinton and Al Gore .

She was a consultant at McKinsey & Company from 1990 to 1992 . She then worked for the National Economic Council from 1993 to 1995. From 1995 to 1997 she was Chief of Staff to Finance Minister Robert Rubin . Mathews served from 1997 to 1998 together with John Podesta President Bill Clinton as deputy chief of staff of the White House. In 1998 Burwell moved to the Office of Management and Budget, where she became Jacob Lews' deputy and stayed until 2001.

She is a member of the University of Washington's Medicine Board , the Pacific Council on International Policy, the Aspen Strategy Group, and the Nike Foundation Advisory Group.

Mathews earned a bachelor's degree cum laude in Administrative Law ( Government ) from Harvard University in 1987 and a bachelor's degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University , where she received a Rhodes Scholarship . She was director of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife) from January 2004 . She frequently returns to West Virginia and West Virginia University to give lectures, and a scholarship to assist students in political science has been established in her honor.

Career

In 2005, Mathews was chosen by the Wall Street Journal under The 50 Women to Watch - 2005 (meaning: 50 women to watch out for ). She has been named as the possible successor to Patty Stonesifer , who announced that she would step down as CEO of the Gates Foundation in 2008. On May 12, 2008, the Foundation announced that Jeff Raikes , an executive at Microsoft, would take over the CEO position. As reported, Mathews and the other Foundation Presidents approved of Raikes' appointment. Mathews was responsible for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation during the Obama / Biden change of government . In February 2007 she married the lawyer Stephen Burwell. You have two children.

Director of the Office of Management and Budget

On March 3, 2013, she nominated President Barack Obama as director of the Office of Management and Budget . A confirmatory hearing was held on April 10, and on April 24, the United States Senate confirmed Burwell as head of agency by 96 votes to zero.

During the Government Shutdown in October 2013, Burwell sent out the email initiating the process of closing the national parks, visitor centers and even the panda cam at the National Zoo . She instructed the action as there was no clear sign that the United States Congress would come to an agreement. In a statement, she called on Congress to act swiftly and come to an agreement to restore the operation of critical public services and programs that have been affected by a funding leak.

Minister of Health

After Kathleen Sebelius' resignation on April 10, 2014, she was nominated for the office of Minister of Health by President Barack Obama the next day . Burwell's nomination was confirmed by the Senate on June 5, 2014 with 78 votes to 17. She officially took office on June 5th and was sworn in on June 9th. On October 9, 2014, she held a press conference on the government's response to Ebola virus disease and the annual health insurance enrollment period.

Her term of office ended when Donald Trump assumed the presidency on January 20, 2017.

American University

Less than a week later, the American University announced that Burwell would become the next university president. She took up her new position on June 1, 2017, becoming the first female president of the university after 14 male predecessors.
