Metropolitan Life Insurance Company ( MetLife ) is a US insurance company headquartered in New York City . The company is listed in the S&P 100 share index. In the Forbes Global 2000 of the largest listed companies, MetLife ranks 78th (as of FY 2017). The company had a market value of around USD 48 billion in mid-2018.

The company offers various types of insurance and is the largest life insurance company in the United States. In 1981, Metlife acquired the MetLife Building, which was renamed in 1992, from the insolvent airline Pan American World Airways . With the acquisition of the life insurance division of Travelers Companies and the subsidiary Annuity from Citigroup, MetLife rose to become the largest life insurer in the United States in 2005. MetLife previously acquired New England Financial and General American Insurance (GenAm). The company mascot is Snoopy from the comic series The Peanuts .
