history

In 2017, the Altria Group generated sales of $ 25.58 billion (including excise taxes , excluding these $ 19.5 billion), an operating profit of $ 9.56 billion and employed around 8,300 people. Well-known cigarette brands are Marlboro and L&M . From October 1985 to February 2008 the company was included in the Dow Jones Industrial Average share index .

The Altria Group also held 87.2% of the shares in Kraft Foods , the second largest producer of food products , through March 2007 . In addition, the Altria Group held all shares in Philip Morris International until the “spin-off” at the end of March 2008 . Altria held a 27% stake in SABMiller until 2016 . After the takeover of SABMiller by Anheuser-Busch Inbev, Altria now holds a share of around 9.6% in Anheuser-Busch Inbev.

On December 20, 2018, it was announced that the Altria Group had acquired 35 percent of the e-cigarette company Juul with a view to future market positions . $ 12.8 billion (EUR 11.2 billion) was paid for the 35 percent share. According to the company, this is the largest investment in Altria's corporate history. Overall, Juul was valued at $ 38 billion in the deal.

Trivia

  • In 1994 all Philip Morris executives swore in court that smoking was not addicting . Critics refer to these statements as perjury .
  • On March 30, 1999, the Philip Morris Corporation was sentenced by a US court in San Francisco to pay $ 81 million in damages to the survivors of a smoker.
