The Belgian-Brazilian Anheuser-Busch InBev group (AB InBev) is - in terms of sales volume - the largest brewery group in the world. It has its legal seat in Brussels and operational headquarters in Leuven and New York City and was created in 2008 through the takeover of Anheuser-Busch by the InBev Group. The company is listed on the Brussels Euronext stock exchange and is part of the EURO STOXX 50 and BEL20 . It employs over 170,000 people and is represented in over 150 countries with 630 brands, brewed in 260 breweries. Global beer production in 2019 was 561 million hectoliters.

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland together, the production volume in 2015 totaled 7.9 million hectoliters, which corresponds to a market share of 8.6 percent in terms of volume.

In 2019, the group sold a total of 561.4 million hectoliters of beer. With sales of $ 52.3 billion and a profit of $ 9.2 billion.

Economic development

Many jobs were cut in the United States after InBev took over Anheuser-Busch . Sold in late 2009, Anheuser-Busch InBev its eastern European business to the private equity -Gesellschaft CVC Capital Partners for about 3 billion US dollars , however, retained the right to the brand Staropramen in several countries to brew and distribute. AB Inbev has continued to grow through acquisitions. The international part (excluding the USA) of the Mexican Grupo Modelo with the world-famous Corona brand was taken over in June 2013.

In April 2014 AB Inbev took over the leading South Korean supplier Oriental Brewery for a total of 5.8 billion dollars , which has a market share of 60 percent there. The dividend per share increased from $ 0.35 for fiscal 2008 to $ 3.00 for 2014. Warren Buffett praises the company's management for its efficiency . In September 2015, Anheuser-Busch informed InBev that they were interested in buying SABMiller . The acquisition of SABMiller for 96 billion euros was officially announced on October 13, 2015. The merger was completed in October 2016.

The Gilde Brewery in Hanover , acquired in 2008 with the takeover of InBev, was sold on to TCB Beteiligungsgesellschaft at the beginning of 2016 .

Despite the ongoing takeover of SABMiller, AB-InBev acquired additional breweries in 2015 and 2016. In December 2015, Camden Town Brewery in London and Breckenridge Brewery in Colorado were taken over. The Devils Backbone Brewing Company, based in Nelson County, and Birra del Borgo in Borgorose, Italy, followed in April 2016 . In September 2016, the Belgian brewery Bosteels was taken over .

Karbach Brewing Co. from Houston was taken over at the beginning of November 2016 . In December 2016, The Coca-Cola Company acquired AB InBev's majority stake in Coca-Cola Beverages Africa for $ 3.15 billion .

In March 2018, AB-InBev and the Turkish Efes Group merged their Russia and Ukraine business. Both companies hold 50 percent of the new company AB-InBev-Efes.

As a result of the largely leveraged large acquisitions, AB Inbev accumulated debt totaling USD 96 billion at the end of 2019 and had USD 128 billion in goodwill on its books. As a result, the company's balance sheet has deteriorated. At the same time, sales difficulties arose in emerging countries and a stagnating beer market in the USA. Management announced that it would reduce net debt to below four times operating profit ( EBITDA ) by the end of 2020 . To achieve this, u. a. the dividend for 2018 reduced by half. In 2019, the sale of the Australian subsidiary Carlton & United Breweries to Asahi was announced. The sale is scheduled to take place in early 2020.

Cartel participation

Regional subsidiaries of Anheuser-Busch InBev were involved in both a beer cartel regarding unauthorized price fixing for beer in the Netherlands between 1996 and 1999 and a beer cartel in Germany between 2006 and 2008. Anheuser-Busch InBev acted as a key witness before the cartel offices in both cases and therefore went unpunished.

subsidiary company

Most of the beer brands are owned by local subsidiaries.

Anheuser-Busch Packaging Group

Unlike most of its competitors, Anheuser-Busch never sold the packaging division. The Metal Container Corp. who have favourited Longhorn Glass Corp. and Eagle Packaging, Inc. produce the majority of the beer cans and bottles required by Anheuser-Busch .

Controversy

In October 2015, the US Department of Justice investigated the company for taking over beer suppliers and preventing these suppliers from selling competing beers.

In May 2017, the company was criticized for reportedly anticompetitive behavior in purchasing all of South African hops ( SAB Hop Farms ) as part of the SABMiller acquisition, thereby making hops available to all U.S. Craft beer brewers blocked. Similar anti-competitive allegations were made in the acquisition of Northern Brewer (Roseville, Minnesota), the largest provider of equipment for home and hobby breweries in the United States, through the company's own venture capital division, ZX Ventures.

The following month, the company was criticized for buying shares in the beer rating site RateBeer because of conflicts of interest .

In July 2017, the company terminated the lease with the Munich pizzeria "Casa mia" after politician Ernst Dill tried in vain to get the owner to ban Pegida fans among his guests. In the previous year, Anheuser-Busch InBev contractually obliged the owner of Casa mia to intervene in all political activities. However, a company spokesman said the termination of the lease was announced, timely and not politically motivated.
