Stella Artois (/ 'stɛlə ɑr'twɑː /) is a Pilsner beer with 4.8 to 5.2% alcohol. It was first made at the Artois Brewery ( Brouwerij Artois ) in Leuven , Belgium, since 1926. After a series of acquisitions, Stella Artois is now part of the world's largest brewing group, Anheuser-Busch InBev .

history

The beginnings of the brewery go back to 1366 (see logo, also on the crown cap). The Den Horen brewery is mentioned for the first time in the ducal interest books . In 1537 the brewery was the largest company in the city of Leuven (Flemish Leuven , French Louvain ). Sebastien Artois becomes master brewer at Den Horen in 1708 . In 1717 he took over the brewery and gave it the name Brouwerij Artois . The Christmas beer Stella (Stern) was launched in 1926. In 1988 Stella Artois became part of the international brewery group Interbrew . The brick facilities with a port connection in the north of the Flemish city of Leuven were abandoned in 1993 and replaced by a new production facility in the same location.

The beer brand is available in Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, France, Great Britain, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and, since 1999, also in the USA. For parts of Central and Southeastern Europe, Stella Artois is brewed and sold under license by Molson Coors Europe .

The annual report of the brewing group Anheuser-Busch InBev for the 2016 financial year reports earnings growth of 6.3%. The BrandZ.com website lists Stella Artois as the fourth most valuable beer brand in the world after Budweiser , Bud Light and Heineken .
