General

Budweiser advertisement from 1907

Budweiser has been brewed in the USA since 1876, inspired by the lager beer that Bohemian emigrants brought from their hometown of Budweis . Budweiser is one of the best-selling beers in the United States . The lager is available in over 80 countries.

Budweiser is a filtered beer that is available on tap as well as in bottles and cans and contains up to 30% rice in addition to hops and barley malt.

Trademark conflict

Anheuser-Busch began one of the longest-running trademark disputes in history with the Czech brewery Budějovický Budvar , although an agreement from 1907 stipulates that Anheuser-Busch may only use the brand name in North America , whereas Budějovický Budvar is entitled to use the brand name in the European market. By 2014, the conflict had resulted in more than 120 proceedings worldwide, from which no clear winner emerged. Because of this conflict, the beer is sold as Bud in almost all countries of the European Union .

marketing

Anheuser-Busch spent around US $ 449 million on advertising the Budweiser brand in 2012, making Budweiser the most advertised beverage brand in America.

Budweiser von Budějovice has been called "The Beer of Kings" since the 16th century. Adolphus Busch adapted this slogan to "The King of Beers" (German: "The King of Beers"). Regardless of this story, Anheuser Busch owns the trademark for these slogans in the United States.

packaging

Over the years Budweiser has been sold in many sizes and containers. Until the early 1950s, Budweiser was mainly sold in three types of packaging: kegs, 355 ml bottles and 0.95 l bottles. The cans were first introduced in 1936, which contributed to a surge in sales. From 1955 August Busch Jr. tried to expand Budweiser's national brand and sales presence. With these expansion plans, there has been great progress in filling automation, new filling materials and more efficient distribution methods have been used. This expansion brought many new container and packaging designs to market. The packaging are often tailored to local customs and traditions.

bottle

Typical Budweiser bottle

The Budweiser bottle has remained relatively unchanged since its introduction in 1876. A small label with the Budweiser "bow-tie" logo is attached to the neck of the bottle. The main label is red with a white box in the middle with a Budweiser logo, reminiscent of a coat of arms, under which the word "Budweiser" is written.

Cans

In an attempt to rekindle interest in their beer after prohibition was lifted, Budweiser began bottling their beer in cans in 1936. This new packaging led to an increase in sales that lasted until the beginning of World War II in 1939.

Over the years Budweiser cans have undergone various design changes in response to market conditions and consumer tastes. There have been 12 major changes to the can design since 1936, not including the temporary special editions.

Budweiser cans have traditionally featured patriotic American symbols such as eagles and the colors red, white, and blue. In 2011 there was a branding redesign that eliminated some of the traditional imagery. The new design was largely a response to the huge drop in sales that threatened Budweiser's status as America's best-selling beer. To regain the domestic market share that Budweiser lost, the company tried to update its look and feel by giving the can a more contemporary look. The company hopes the new design will offset the effects of unemployment on its sales. Although the more modern design is aimed at young American men, the new design was also part of an attempt to focus on the international market. Budweiser started selling its beer in Russia in 2010 and is currently expanding its activities in China.

Budweiser brands

In addition to the regular Budweiser, Anheuser-Busch brews several different beers under the Budweiser brand, including Bud Light , Bud Ice and Bud Light Lime .

In July 2010, Anheuser-Busch launched Budweiser 66 in the UK. Budweiser Brew No.66 is 4% alcohol by volume and is brewed and sold in the UK by Inbev UK Limited.

International production

Budweiser is licensed, manufactured and sold in Canada by Labatt Breweries of Canada. Of the 15 Anheuser-Busch breweries outside the United States, 14 are located in China. Budweiser is the fourth largest brand in the Chinese beer market.
