Telenet is a Belgian telecommunications company based in Mechelen .

history

  • Telenet was founded in 1996 and started laying a fiber optic backbone in Flanders that same year
  • In 1997 the first product came onto the market: broadband internet access , which was sold under the Pandora name
  • In 1998 Telenet also offered telephony
  • In 1999 the company was renamed from Pandora to Telenet
  • In 2003, parts of the pay TV channel Canal + were taken over by the subsidiary PayTVCo NV
  • 2005 Telenet is listed on the Euronext stock exchange
  • In 2006 Telenet also began offering mobile telephony, using the Mobistar network

activities

Telenet is - by its own account - the market leader in Belgium in Internet access for private households, telephony and digital TV services, and Telenet is also active in the field of analog cable TV, mobile telephony and corporate customer solutions (Telenet Solutions).

In 2008, the company had 629,000 fixed line telephony customers, 985,000 Internet customers, 674,000 IDTV customers and 539,000 so-called triple play customers.

In 2008 a turnover of 1.02 billion euros was achieved, the largest share of which was accounted for by the Internet sector with 34%, followed by analog cable television with 24%.

The share is traded on the NYSE Euronext in Brussels, where it is part of the major share index BEL20 .

The majority shareholder of Telenet is the media group Liberty Global , which holds 56.36% of the shares. Most of the rest of the shares are in free float.

Sponsorship

Telenet is the main sponsor of the Telenet-Fidea Cycling Team and jersey sponsor of the KV Mechelen .
