IDTV

As IDTV (. English Integrated Digital Television ), rarely iDTV are televisions designated in which a receiver for digital TV (for DVB - ATSC - or ISDB standard) is integrated.

Many such devices continue to have an analog PAL , SECAM and / or NTSC receiver. Such devices do not require a separate set-top box (STB) for DTV reception ; Requirements such as the encryption of the data on the cable between STB and display are largely eliminated.

However, some devices do not support subscription cards by pay-TV providers , ie without an external decoder only free television (FTA free to air ). Other devices provide an interface ( Common Interface , CI) into which a module ( Conditional Access Module , CAM) can be inserted, which in turn accepts the card. Functions known from separate receivers are also possible. These include program guides ( EPG , electronic program guide ), return channel capability for interactive television (e.g. with MHP ) or recording and playback capabilities using hard drives or DVDs ( PVR , personal video recorder ).

After ATSC and ISDB for the American, Korean and Japanese markets, DVB-T is also increasingly supported , often in combination with the technically very similar DVB-C and / or DVB-S . Such devices lead z. B. Artec, Humax , Loewe , Metz , Sharp , Sony , TechniSat , Thomson , X4-Tech, Samsung and Toshiba .

IDTV with integrated PC

In 2007, the well-known Danish consumer electronics manufacturer Bang & Olufsen announced "in future, B&O televisions will be equipped with a Microsoft operating system". In addition to the consolidation of telecommunications from previously separate networks for voice and data into a single Next Generation Network (NGN), a PC operating system in the television set will in future provide a uniform user interface between PC and television set in a single device. Conventional television set manufacturers see such developments with eagle eyes, since such a development would endanger all previous additional devices linked to a television, such as DVD players, video recorders or AV amplifiers. Proponents, however, argue that operating a PC has become general knowledge, but that programming a video recorder is still unsuccessful due to a user interface that is proprietary to each device and manufacturer. It is indicative of such fears that some flat-screen TVs (e.g. Philips) still do not support the connection of a PC sufficiently.

  • A television with an integrated PC operating system also brings a web browser and thus “Internet” as new content on the television screen.
  • Previous efforts with regard to interactive television ( Multimedia Home Platform , Betty (remote control) , Blucom ) would be obsolete with a PC operating system through browser access to all web content on the television screen.
  • Additional entertainment electronics devices would be superfluous with a PC operating system and would be replaced by PC accessories.
