Staropramen
Staropramen is a beer brand and the second largest Czech brewery with an output of over 3 million hl per year .
history
The brewery was founded as a joint stock brewery in Prague in 1869 , where a modern brewery was built according to plans by the engineer Gustav Noback . From 1871 beer was brewed and sold, in 1911 the brand name "Staropramen" (literally: "Alte Quelle") was registered. František Tichý , an artist from the Czech avant-garde , designed the logo for the brewery. After the Second World War , the company was confiscated and nationalized. In 1989, after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, it was converted into a stock corporation with foreign investment capital.
From 1993 the British group Bass was the majority shareholder with 80 percent. Bass was taken over by InBev in 2000 . In December 2009, AB InBev sold parts of the brewery business in Central and Eastern Europe to the private equity firm CVC Capital Partners , which the resulting group called StarBev . In some countries, including Germany, AB InBev has reserved the right to brew and sell Staropramen itself. In 2012, StarBev was again taken over by the North American brewery group Molson Coors . Today the brewery in the Smíchov district of Prague is the headquarters of Molson Coors Europe . In mid-2019, the Staropramen brewery took over 89% of the shares in the Pardubický brewery.
As early as 1884 Staropramen exported to the USA , after the Second World War the export business could only be resumed at the beginning of the 1950s due to a lack of raw materials. Staropramen Export Company is now the third largest Czech beer exporter, selling its main brand in 37 countries, mainly America and the European Union.
