Kriek ( Flemish for sour cherry ) is a traditional in Belgium produced Fruchtlambic with an alcohol content of approximately 4% to 6%. It is one of the Belgian beer specialties .

Manufacturing

About 200 grams per liter of beer to be fresh cherries in Lambic macerated and for the purpose of second fermentation left three 18 months because of fructose in the drum. Even today, brewers still prefer the old Schaarbeek cherry variety from near Brussels. The already small cherries of the increasingly rare, tart tasting variety are usually only harvested when they have already shrunk slightly and have therefore already been concentrated. This ensures a more intense aroma. The cherry lambic has a red color and smells intensely fruity.

consumption

Kriek is drunk from balloon glasses at a temperature of 5 to 6 ° C. Its fruitiness and acidity have made it a popular summer drink. In winter it is also offered hot and spicy at Christmas markets. Kriek is also used as an ingredient in Flemish cuisine.
