Cement Roadstone Holding plc (CRH) is a global Irish building materials manufacturer headquartered in Dublin . The company was formed in 1970 through the merger of Irish companies Cement Holding and Roadstone Ltd. The company is a member of the ISEQ Overall Index on the Irish Stock Exchange . It is on the stock exchanges in London and New York City and traded among the 50 companies in the EURO STOXX 50 - stock index . In 2012, CRH had a production capacity of 56 million tons of cement .
The company has around 3,300 branches and holdings, including the Swiss corporate groups Jura-Holding (building materials production) and CRH Central Europe Builders Merchants (with a stake in CRH Gétaz Group (building materials trade)) as well as the German companies Echo Betonfertigteile GmbH , Unidek Deutschland GmbH and the Gefinex GmbH as well as the concrete block manufacturers EHL AG .

1970-1990
The company, whose name began as an abbreviation for Cement Roadstone Holdings , was created in 1970 through the merger of Cement Ltd. (founded 1936) and Roadstone Ltd. (founded in 1949). According to the Financial Times' Jonathan Guthrie , it is pronounced "Cee Orr Haitch". The company was listed on the Irish Stock Exchange in 1973.
CRH occurred in 1978 in the market of the United States on by the Group Amcor bought a manufacturer of concrete in Utah, which then formed the basis for the US division of the company, which is now Oldcastle Inc. 's. Subsequent major purchases in the United States in 1985 included Callanan Industries, a New York-based manufacturer of aggregates and asphalt. In 1986 the Dutch Heras , a manufacturer of construction fences , was bought. In 1987 CRH was included in the UK's FTSE 100 Index .
1991-1999
In the 1990s, the company entered the French market by purchasing "Raboni SA", a construction company, and "Prefaest SA", a drainage system and concrete vault manufacturer.
In 1995, CRH entered the emerging markets for the first time by buying the holding "Cement Polski", which later took over the majority in "Cementownia Ozarow", one of the largest Polish cement manufacturers. This acquisition was the first cement manufacturing operation outside of Ireland. By the end of the decade, CRH had more than a dozen plants in Poland and has since invested in cement production in neighboring Ukraine. In 1999 CRH bought "Finnsementti Oy", Finland's only cement producer, and "Lohja Rudus Oy", Finland's leading producer of aggregates and ready-mixed concrete.
In the 1990s, the US acquisitions of CRH "Betco Block & Products Inc." of Bethesda , Maryland in 1990. CRH acquired "Balf Co." in 1994 in Connecticut , "Lebanon Rock" in Pennsylvania , "Keating" in Massachusetts, and "Sullivan Lafarge" in New York State. In 1996 the company acquired "Allied Building Products", which had specialized in roofing and cladding products, and "Tilcon", a major road construction specialist in the northeastern United States.
2000-2010
The company entered Switzerland in 2000 with the purchase of the Jura Group. In the following year CRH took a stake in "Neher Israel Cement Works", the only cement manufacturer in this country, and took a 25% stake in its holding company Mashav. In July 2003 she took over "Cementbouw", a DIY chain and building materials manufacturer in the Netherlands. In the United States, CRH acquired Shelly Group in Ohio in 2000 and New Jersey-based Mount Hope Rock Products and Ashland Paving And Construction in Atlanta in 2006. Other components of the group since 2006 have been Halfen GmbH , the Austrian building materials dealer Quester and the German building materials dealer Bauking AG . In 2007, CRH acquired four companies valued at $ 350 million to expand its US materials business: Conrad Yelvington Distributors Inc., Eugene Sand & Gravel, Cessford Construction, and McMinns Asphalt and Prospect Agrregates .
In 2006, CRH invested in a cement factory in the Heilongjiang region of China. In 2008, CRH took over a 50 percent stake in the Indian cement company "My Home Industries Ltd."
2011-2018
In 2015 CRH agreed to purchase the British building materials manufacturer "Lafarge Tarmac". In the same year, CRH acquired $ 6.5 billion in assets from the newly formed LafargeHolcim . With the acquisition of LafargeHolcim, CRH became the third largest building materials group in the world by market value.
In 2017, CRH acquired the German company Fels, a manufacturer of lime and aggregates with business areas also in the Czech Republic and Moscow. In 2018, CRH acquired the Ash Grove Cement Company in the USA.
