Diageo plc (pronunciation [dɪˈɑ: d͡ʒjəʊ̯] ) is a global manufacturer of alcoholic beverages. The company operates in more than 180 countries and its shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange .

The main sales markets are in Europe (34%) and North America (37%). With an annual turnover of around 18 billion euros and a sales volume of 960 million liters (2012 financial year), Diageo was the world's largest spirits manufacturer . In 2012, seven Diageo brands were among the top 25 premium spirits brands in the western world by sales.

In 2017, Diageo was overtaken in market capitalization by the Chinese spirits group K Weichow Moutai .

history

The company was formed in December 1997 through the merger of Grand Metropolitan (with subsidiary International Distillers and Vintners (IDV)) and Guinness (with subsidiary United Distillers (UD), originally Distillers Company Limited , "adopted" in 1986). By 2002, IDV and UD formed the Diageo subsidiary United Distillers and Vintners (UDV), which has since been re-incorporated into Diageo.

Diageo is thus the successor company of the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) group, which was created in April 1877 by merging seven distilleries and which built its first own malt still in Knockdhu in 1893, and the British Contergan licensee Distillers Company (Biochemicals) Limited (DCBL) . Contergan was developed in Germany by the Grünenthal company and sold in England by DCBL under the name Distaval from April 14, 1958 .

After the introduction of the Alcopop brand Smirnoff Ice , sales in Germany rose by 675.5 percent in the 2002/2003 financial year.

In 2010 the Federal Constitutional Court rejected an urgent appeal by Diageo against the special tax on alcopops introduced in 2004 . The company's application is inadmissible and the reasons given are without substance.

Also in 2010, on the occasion of a deficit totaling £ 862 million (equivalent to EUR 1.05 billion) in its UK pension fund , Diageo developed a ten-year plan according to which - in addition to a payment of £ 197 million into the company pension - up to 2, 5 million barrels of whiskey should serve as fixed assets .

In the fourth quarter of 2015, most of Diageo's UK and US wine division was taken over by the Australian Treasury Wine Estates .

whiskey

Diageo owns 28 whiskey distilleries in Scotland . In addition to Dimple , J&B and Johnnie Walker , the company also markets single malt whiskeys such as Lagavulin , Glenkinchie and Talisker . Since 1987 products from six selected distilleries have been sold under the name Classic Malts . At the end of 2005 five more distilleries were added. Diageo has several whiskey mixed drinks produced in the USA and Canada. The most important brand there is Bulleit , for which a separate distillery is to be opened in Kentucky in 2016. In 2015, the group acquired a stake in the Danish manufacturer Stauning Whiskey .
