Classic malts

Collective package that promises six classic whiskeys from six classic regions

The Classic Malts are thirteen (originally six) Scottish single malt whiskeys from the range of the spirits company Diageo (formerly United Distillers), which are marketed together. They include representatives of the Lowlands , Highlands , Speyside and Islay whiskey regions , but not Campbeltown , as well as the only distillery on the Isle of Skye , Talisker . The introduction of the range in 1987 is related to the renaissance of Scottish single malt whiskeys, which began at Glenfiddich in 1963 . According to the whiskey connoisseur Walter Schobert , the merit of the "series that cannot be valued highly enough for the resurrection of Scotch malt whiskey" is to have demonstrated for the first time the value of the versatility of the single malt and the importance of its regional origin.

The series originally claimed to represent the six “classic” whiskey regions of Scotland with six bottlings: Talisker for Skye , Dalwhinnie for the Highlands , Oban for the West Highlands, Glenkinchie for the Lowlands , Lagavulin for Islay and Cragganmore for the Speyside . This classification of Scotland does not enjoy general recognition and in any case does not correspond to the regions of the Scotch Whiskey Association .

At the end of 2005, Diageo renamed the series Classic Malts Selection and added bottlings from the Caol Ila , Clynelish , Glen Elgin , Knockando and Royal Lochnagar distilleries . Since 2007, a 12-year-old Glenkinchie has replaced the 10-year-old who had been part of the series until then; Since then, bottlings from Cardhu and Dufftown have also been added. In addition to the standard bottlings, a Distillers Edition of the same whiskeys is offered, which, however, differs from the actual Classic Malts in that they are subsequently stored (finishing) in special barrels .
