Royal Lochnagar is a whiskey distillery in Ballater , Aberdeenshire , Scotland , UK . It lies close to the River Dee about two kilometers downriver from the privately owned by the British royal family nearby Castle Balmoral Castle . The distillery is named after the nearby Lochnagar mountain . It belongs to the spirits group Diageo (formerly United Distillers). The whiskey is now marketed as part of the Group's Classic Malts range. The distillery buildings are classified in category B in the Scottish monument lists.

history

The Lochnagar distillery was founded in 1845 by John Begg. Queen Victoria bought Balmoral Castle in 1848 and that same year paid a visit to the distillery next door. Begg was appointed purveyor to the court and the distillery was able to add "Royal" to its name. From 1916 the distillery was owned by the Distillers Company Ltd. and thus belongs to Diageo today .

The whiskey

There is a very widespread 12-year-old bottling, which can also be found in supermarkets. There is also a so-called "Selected Reserve" without any age information. Until about 2007 the Royal Lochnagar was available in various bottlings in the Rare Malts Selection. Since 2008 there has also been a Distillers Edition, as is common for Classic Malts . For this, the malt was stored in Moscatel barrels for some time . Also from independent bottlers there are always individual bottlings in the trade, u. a. by Signatory and Douglas Laing. Royal Lochnagar is part of various blends, such as B. in Johnnie Walker (Gold and Blue Label) and in Dimple.
