Andreas Brugger

Andreas Brugger (born November 16, 1737 in Kressbronn ; † February 8, 1812 in Langenargen ) was a German painter of Rococo and Classicism .

Life and education

Brugger was born in 1737, together with his twin brother Xaver, as a child of the married couple Josef and Theresia Brugger in what is now Kressbronn and baptized in the parish church of Gattnau .

He began a six-year apprenticeship in 1749, probably with Joseph Esperlin in Scheer. Count Ernst von Montfort became aware of the artistically talented Andreas Brugger and in August 1755 sent him to Vienna for further training in the workshop of Franz Anton Maulbertsch (1724–1796) , who came from Langenargen . Here Brugger grew up to be a Baroque painter with southern German and Austrian characteristics. For a long time, Maulbert's legacy can be demonstrated in Brugger's frescoes and oil paintings as an important design principle in terms of shape and color. During and after a study visit to Rome in 1768/69 (March 1769 first prize at the Accademia del Nudo on the Capitol), the classicism, which was characterized by calming and simplicity, had an impact on Brugger's work. When he returned to his home on Lake Constance , the period of great church and secular commissions began. The works still preserved today and attributed to the Langenargener painter include around 35 frescoes and over 220 panel paintings. Brugger is one of the most important painters in Upper Swabia .

Brugger died at the age of 75 on February 8, 1812 in Langenargen in his own house, assigned to his nephew Alois Brugger.

Works

In the presence of her father, Emperor Ludwig the Pious, the founder of the monastery, Adelindis, places the charter on an altar (from the main ceiling painting of the baroque collegiate church in Buchau by Andreas Brugger, 1775–1776)

The great works of Brugger were created during his time in Tettnang , Salemer , Wurzacher and Buchau .

Bad Buchau

• In the choir of the collegiate church St. Cornelius and Cyprianus in Bad Buchau, a panel shows “ The Glorification of the Lamb by the Angels and the 24 Elders ”. In the central nave Brugger painted three frescoes: " Abraham's encounter with Melchizedech ", " Manna rain with Moses and Aaron " and in the middle " The Assumption of Mary into Heaven ".

Bad Wurzach

• The ceiling painting in the parish church of Bad Wurzach shows various biblical representations and episodes on a size of 22 × 10 meters.

Bodnegg

• In Bodnegg, parish church of St. Ulrich and Magnus, Brugger worked three large frescoes in 1769 after his stay in Rome on behalf of Weissenau Abbey: The main fresco in the nave “Annunciation”, the ceiling fresco in the antechamber “Adam and Eve in Paradise” (preserved, but painted over ), the ceiling fresco in the choir "Adoration of the Lamb". The grisailles executed by Brugger on the parapets of the double gallery have only survived in fragments.

Eriskirch

• In the church of the Mariabrunner district , the ceiling painting shows " The healing effect of water " and " The intercession of Mary ".

Friedrichshafen

• In 1789 Andreas Brugger created the ceiling fresco “ Maria Intercessor of Threatened Humanity ” in the Ailingen Rosary Chapel .

Kressbronn

• In the Assumption Chapel in the Schleinsee district , Andreas Brugger is credited with a picture of Saint Anthony.
• Brugger's ceiling paintings in the St. Gallus parish church in Gattnau were destroyed in 1903 when the nave walls were raised.

Langenargen

• The panel in the parish church painted in 1799/1800 shows the patron saint " St. Martin " kneeling on clouds and St. Fridolin.

Neukirch

• The picture in the Neukirch parish church shows the " Glorification of Mary by Johannes von Montfort ".

Rorschach

• In the Rorschach parish church, Brugger painted an oval ceiling painting that shows, among other things, the " Saint Columban " .

Salem

• For the former Cistercian monastery in Salem, Brugger mainly painted panels with the theme of " Saint Bernard " and his life.

Tettnang

• In the Johanneskapelle two Brugger works show the " Finding of the dead Sebastian " and " Maria Himmelfahrt ".
• In the New Castle Brugger was employed for several years. Here he created the ceiling paintings “ Heracles before Zeus ”, presumably after 1770 (in the Bacchus Hall), “ Johannes von Montfort on a high horse ”, dated and signed in 1770 (in the castle chapel), and the “ Glorification of Agriculture after the Four Seasons ”(in the left stairwell) and in the right stairwell the“ Hunting scenes with the Greek goddess Diana ”and a supposed self-portrait, as well as the panel paintings“ Vagantengestalten ”and“ Bacchus with a satyr ”from around 1765.
• In the parish church in Krumbach , Brugger designed a total of 33 individual pictures, including the ceiling picture with the theme “ View of Heaven with the Holy Trinity ”, the choir fresco with the “ Adoration of Christ by the Shepherds ” and the pictures of the Fourteen Holy Helpers , such as the Holy Erasmus , the Saint Barbara , the Saint Catherine and Saint Egidio .
• In 1804 the side altars of the parish church of St. Martin in Tannau were decorated with the two oil paintings by Andreas Brugger, “ Death of St. Joseph ”and“ St. Kinship, St. Joachim, St. Anna and Maria ”consecrated. In addition, Brugger created the ceiling fresco in the choir (Triumph of St. Martin) and four corner medallions with depictions of the four main virtues of St. Martin in 1781.

Both in Kressbronn (Andreas-Brugger-Weg) and in Langenargen (Andreas-Brugger-Straße) there is a public transport route named after him in honor of the artist.
