The majority of the village belonged to the Montfortgrafen area for a long time . The name Tannau was first mentioned as a municipality in 1810.

Before that, the place was called Missenhardt , whose name was changed to Tannau in 1824. It consisted of 27 parcels, including Argenhardt, Baumgarten, Hagenbuchen, Iglerberg, Reichen, Schoos (no longer exist today), Wagnerberg and Zimmerberg.
In 1937 the community of Obereisenbach was dissolved and Tannau was incorporated, Tannau gave plots to Tettnang and Laimnau.

coat of arms

The blazon of the coat of arms reads: In silver on a green ground a green fir tree; top right accompanied by a three-lobed red flag on three black suspension rings

The symbol of the fir tree is not related to the place name, but was associated with it . Possibly it is a derivation of the place name from its founder, a "Tanno". The three-lobed red flag is a reminder of belonging to the County of Montfort. The community received its coat of arms on June 29, 1961. However, it is no longer used officially after it was incorporated into Tettnang.

Culture and sights

Parish Church of St. Martin Tannau

The church, built around 1121, was originally a Chapel of the Holy Helpers . In 1663 the church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Sigismund von Konstanz in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Martinus.

In 1720 the building was converted to its present form with a tendency towards the baroque style and the consecration of the new high altar with the figures of St. Conrad (left) and St. Ulrich (right) on the side panels. In 1723 the side altars were consecrated in the same style as the high altar with the two oil paintings "Death of St. Joseph" (left) and "Little Maria with her mother Anna" (right) created by Andreas Brugger .

In the second half of the 19th century , the flat plaster ceiling was decorated with a picture of the Rosary Queen, the patron saint of Tannau. An overall restoration of the church with an extension of the ceiling painting to include the image of the village with the church and a surrounding stucco frame took place in 1954. At the same time, the baroque confessional from 1763 was acquired from the Hiltensweiler parish .

From May 2007 to February 2008 the church was completely renovated inside. The most important changes include the redesign of the chancel (new altar and ambo, new position of the baptismal font), the renewal of the entire electrical system including the heating system and a new floor covering in the entire church. The completion of the interior renovation was celebrated on February 17, 2008 with a solemn consecration of the altar by Bishop Gebhard Fürst .

Path of faith

The pastoral care unit Argental , an amalgamation of the Catholic parishes of Goppertsweiler , Hiltensweiler , Krumbach , Laimnau , Neukirch , Obereisenbach , Tannau and Wildpoltsweiler , created a path of faith in the respective places for its tenth anniversary in 2010. Large natural stones have been set up at eight of eleven stations in Tannau and the surrounding hamlets. A plaque with the logo of the pastoral care unit and a saying or verse is attached to each of these stones and three existing floor crosses . The length of the Tannau section is 12.6 kilometers.

From the Argenbrücke near Steinenbach the route led to Rappertsweiler, Loderhof and Gebhardsweiler to the Dietmannsweiler Kreuz above Baldensweiler and on to Flockenbach, past the Anna chapel, to Vorder- and Hinterreute and through Grünkraut to the salt market in Ravensburg.
