history

1974 to 1980: foundation and relocation

In 1974 Albrecht von Dewitz founded the company Vaude, which sells mountain sports equipment and produces its own backpacks. The company headquarters and production site in Obereisenbach was established in 1980.

1992 to 2001: New products and a children's home

In 1992 a new product area for cycling articles was established. In 1998 the company started producing lifestyle-oriented bags and backpacks. In 1994 the Ecolog recycling network was started. An attempt was made to 100% recycle functional outdoor clothing.

Vaude has had its own company kindergarten at the Obereisenbach site since 2001 .

2002 to 2008: Edelrid and Obereisenbach outdoor pool

Vaude has been the official partner and supplier of the German Alpine Club since 2002 .

In 2006 the climbing brand Edelrid (Edelmann + Ridder GmbH & Co. KG, company headquarters: Isny / Allgäu) was taken over by the Vaude Group. The brands Lucky for climbing equipment and Markill for camping stoves were integrated into the Edelrid brand in 2008 . Markill was originally a brand of the Marsteller & Killmann company , which was founded in Thuringia in 1866 and had been based in Kettwig since 1907 . Marsteller & Killmann manufactured stoves , cookware, food containers and drinking bottles made of aluminum.

The operation of the outdoor swimming pool in Obereisenbach was also taken over in 2006 in order to prevent it from being closed.

Vaude has been EMAS and ISO 14001 certified since 2008 .

Since 2009: Antje von Dewitz as managing director

In 2009, the daughter of company founder Albrecht von Dewitz, Antje von Dewitz, took over the management. In 2010 the company joined the Fair Wear Foundation . The cooperation with WWF Germany started in 2011 .

In 2017 the company Red Chili , mainly known as a manufacturer of climbing shoes, was taken over by the group company Edelrid.

Products and production

Products include clothing, tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, shoes and bags. Vaude manufactures its products at its own location or at partners in Europe, Taiwan, China, Vietnam and Korea. Vaude has its own production site at the headquarters in Tettnang. 60% of sales are generated in Germany.

A fire in April 2015 severely damaged the production facility for panniers at the headquarters in Obereisenbach. Vaude then built a new factory here, which went into operation in January 2017. The temporarily outsourced 42-person manufacturing team returned to the company headquarters.

Corporate responsibility

Ecological and climate protection commitment

The company relies heavily on sustainability and environmental protection both in product development and as a brand. According to its own information from 2016, Vaude wants to become the most environmentally friendly outdoor outfitter in Europe. On the product side, Vaude designs both the entire supply chain and the life cycle of the products consistently according to ecological and fair criteria. In 2015, Vaude launched the pioneering project Environmental Stewardship in the Supply Chain , which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and financially supported by the German Investment and Development Company (DEG) as part of the “develoPPP.de” program . Asian suppliers received intensive training over two years in the areas of environmental, chemical and occupational safety management and social standards. In order to extend the life of the products, Vaude has initiated innovative concepts such as the second use platform on Ebay or the cooperation with the repair platform iFixit . Vaude has been working with the strict bluesign environmental standard since 2001, which controls the entire textile value chain. Vaude was the first outdoor company to be eco-certified according to the Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). Products are marked with their own Green Shape label which, according to the company, are manufactured in a particularly environmentally friendly and resource-saving manner. Vaude describes the goal of manufacturing the entire product range in an environmentally friendly way step by step. The company also signed the German Sustainability Code in 2011 .

The Tettnang location and all products manufactured there have been climate neutral since 2012. In 2015, the renovation of the company building was completed, which was finally certified by the German Sustainable Building Council . Another project is the irentit platform , which was set up in 2018 and is intended to enable the company's products to be rented for a certain period of time as part of a shared economy .

The company is also involved in the so-called bioeconomy, which is sometimes viewed critically, and tests the possible uses of bio-based raw materials as a crude oil substitute for its products. In 2020, the group wants to introduce a jacket that consists of 50% castor oil . In 2019, a fleece jacket with integrated wood fibers will be offered.

Social responsibility

In July 2010, Vaude was criticized for having production in Burma , a developing country ruled by a military dictatorship. Vaude then announced that it wanted to withdraw from this country as gently as possible by 2012. Vaude is also a member of the multi-stakeholder initiative Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) and draws up a public welfare balance audited by the organization Gemeinwohl Ökonomie .

The company operates an outdoor swimming pool in Obereisenbach and has thus saved it from being closed. The social and ecological commitment is documented in the annual sustainability report. The sustainability report has been drawn up in accordance with the GRI standard since July 2014 .

As a result of the so-called Detox campaign by Greenpeace , Vaude has undertaken to remove the chemicals in question from the entire supply chain by 2018.

Refugee aid

At the beginning of 2018, Antje von Dewitz and the brewing entrepreneur Gottfried Härle founded the right to stay initiative for refugees (later right to stay through work ), which 110 companies and three associations from Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria had joined by November 2018. The entrepreneurial initiative demands a right of residence for rejected asylum seekers who have to return to their home country after receiving the rejection notice. As part of the European refugee crisis, Vaude had hired a total of twelve permanent refugees from 2015, seven of which were threatened with deportation in 2018. Antje von Dewitz said the following to the IHK magazine Die Wirtschaft between Alb and Bodensee: "That would be a lot of economic damage for us, not to mention the human catastrophe."

The aim of the entrepreneurship initiative is a secure prospect of residence for refugees who are already in Germany with a permanent job, which should apply until the immigration law is due. The total of 150 companies in the initiative generate an annual turnover of 44 billion euros and provide over half a million jobs in Baden-Württemberg. According to their own statements, they employ a total of 2,000 refugees. The initiative is supported by the IHK Bodensee-Oberschwaben.

On April 19, the initiative was received by the Interior Minister of Baden-Württemberg, Thomas Strobl . Antje von Dewitz spoke out in favor of the rapid introduction of an immigration law , as Vaude had to struggle with a labor shortage in certain areas that could be covered by recruiting foreign workers. Minister Strobel assured the initiative of his support.
