The company Edelrid is a German manufacturer of climbing and mountaineering equipment ( Personal Protective Equipment ) based in Isny . The company was founded in 1863 by the businessman and alpinist Julius Edelmann and the technician Carl Ridder as a wire and cord factory. Edelrid has been part of the Vaude Group since 2006 .

history

In 1863, Julius founded noble man and Carl Rid of the company Edelrid in Isny. This makes Edelrid the oldest existing mountain sports company in the world after the Swiss company Mammut (founded in 1862). Initially only strands and cords were produced. The braided fishing lines made of linen and silk presented in 1880 were the first signs of the later focus on technical braiding.

In 1953 the company developed the principle of the modern kernmantle rope . The combination of a load-bearing core and a protective jacket layer is standard for climbing ropes today . Further innovations included the first multi-fall rope (dynamic climbing rope, 1964), the chest strap (1965), the principle of the twin rope (1977), and the first buoyant rope for canyoning (1994).

In July 1973 there was a gas explosion in the production hall, which completely burned down the production facility. Production could not be resumed until mid-1974.

On January 1, 2001, the family business was transferred to the English group of companies The Rope Company Ltd. sold. In 2006 Edelrid was taken over by the Vaude Group. In 2008 the brands Lucky for climbing equipment and Markill for camping stoves and cookware were integrated into the Edelrid brand. In 2017, the company Red Chili , best known as a climbing shoe manufacturer, was bought by Edelrid, with their products still being sold by Edelrid under the brand name Red Chili.

Products

The production of climbing ropes is still a core business of the company today. The company continues to focus its products on personal protective equipment (PPE) for the areas of sport climbing, occupational safety and high ropes courses (adventure parks).

Edelrid has been EMAS and ISO 14001 certified since 2010 .
