Joseph Esperlin (* 1707 in Degernau near Ingoldingen ; † March 12, 1775, presumably in Beromünster ) was an Upper Swabian painter of the late Baroque and Rococo periods .

Life

Joseph Esperlin learned painting from the Riedlinger painter Joseph Ignaz Wegscheider and Francesco Trevisani in Rome. From 1740 he worked in Biberach , from 1747 to 1753 in Scheer , and probably in Basel from 1755 . From Biberach and Scheer, he mainly painted altarpieces and frescoes throughout Swabia in the service of the church. After that he made oil paintings and frescoes with ancient mythological subjects, as well as portraits , mainly for private clients (especially the patrician families of the Basler Daig ).
