The parish church of St. Nikolaus is a Catholic church building in the town of Scheer in the Sigmaringen district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The church with a Gothic cross was built in the 14th century on one of the last limestone cliffs of the White Jura before the Danube leaves the Swabian Alb in a wide loop . In the 18th century she was given a rococo dress .

Furnishing

The church owns important art treasures, such as the bust reliquary of Saint Wunibald and a sandstone epitaph. Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer created the stucco decorations and the frescoes were painted by Joseph Esperlin (1707–1775). A restored diorama on the outer wall shows the praying Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, in the background the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

In 2009 the ringing in the tower with its six bells was renewed.

Eduard Mörike

The poem “Josephine” by Eduard Mörike is said to have its origin here.

The high mass was. The morning sun view
Glomm wonderfully in the sweet incense;
The priest was silent; now the music roared
From the choir down to the depths of the community.
A sun-drunk Aar falls like this
From heaven with glorious plumage,
Thus Jehovah's cloak leaves invisible
Storming down from the clouds.
In between I hear a voice blowing
Which gently interrupted the storm of the choirs;
She huddled with sisterly supplication
Following the sweetly related tone of the flute.
Who is it that sends these heavenly sounds?
The girl there who looks so humble.
I hurry gently to the gallery;
My heart is pounding, but I step behind her.
Here I can then in innocent pleasure
Touch her festive dress with a soft hand,
I could still, unconscious of you,
Feel the close movement of her being.
