Parish Church of St. Gallus

St. Gallus Church

The church was built in 1788 and has existed in its current form since 1792. The existence of a church in Gattnau is documented as early as 1412. The Way of the Cross and the lead glass windows of today's church were designed in 1963 by the Vorarlberg artist and restorer Konrad Honold .

History of the parish church

The very dilapidated church in Gattnau, which probably dates from the 15th century, was to be replaced by a new building in Hemigkofen at the request of the Tettnang District Office. This application was rejected in January 1787 by a letter from the Upper Austrian government to the Oberamt. Instead, a new church should be planned in Gattnau. After the plans were submitted by the master builder Johann Baptist Thumb and the various proposals had been examined, the Upper Austrian government issued the approval or the order for the new church:

“The imperial-royal superior office is instructed on its submissions on the 13th and reception of the 16th of September to carry out the necessary repairs to the church and to the rectory in Gattnau according to that of the second sublit: A and B. on the 8th of June to sent building plans to organize, which the imperial-royal front-Austrian chamber accounting by means of the report attached to the imperial-royal upper office there sub codem, and building plan subligno D. has found to be the better and has proposed to bring it to bear. "
Freiburg, September 20, 1787

The foundation stone was laid on March 10, 1788, the completion of the construction with the cemetery wall, parsonage and messner's house was reported to the Tettnang District Office on St. Nicholas' Day in 1791. Born in 1737 Kressbronn Andreas Brugger , one of the most important painters of the Rococo and Classicism in southern Germany, was awarded the contract for the painting of the church in the summer 1790th

After around five years of construction, the new St. Gallus Church was inaugurated on the day of Heilgen Gebhard in 1793 by Bishop Maximilian Christoph von Rodt from Constance .

The renovation of the church tower was not completed until 1804 for cost reasons.
