Geographical location
The hamlet of Hepbach is located in the Riedheim district at the foot of the Gehrenberg between the town center of Markdorf in the west and Oberteuringen and Ravensburg in the east. Direct neighboring towns are Leimbach in the west and Stadel in the east, both of which also belong to Markdorf.
Expansion of the area
The total area of the district Hepbach is 521 hectares (status: cancellation of the special district 1924).
Protected areas
West of the local area, between Leimbach, Hepbach and Riedheim, is part of what was once a large fens complex. The reed is part of the Hepbacher-Leimbacher Ried nature reserve with reed areas, remains of litter meadows and tall herbaceous areas. The area is grazed by Heck cattle and is known for its stork nests .
history
Hepbach was first mentioned in 1191 as Hegebach (= Bach im Hag). The Weingarten Monastery was given property early on, allegedly from the founder Welf himself. In 1191, Emperor Heinrich VI took over goods from the Kreuzungen Monastery . the bailiwick. In 1241 Konrad Schenk von Winterstetten handed over his own property in Hepbach to Baindt Monastery . Salem Monastery acquired goods from Raderach and Deggenhausen, among others .
Until 1803, Hepbach was part of the county of Heiligenberg , which had been ruled by the princes of Fürstenberg since the 16th century . Within the county, Hepbach belonged to the Riedheim office. Then the village came to the Grand Duchy of Baden .
By decree of the Ministry of the Interior in Karlsruhe in 1924 it was ordered that the special demarcations of Gangenweiler , Hepbach, Leimbach and Stadel were to be repealed and united with Riedheim to form a community with the name Riedheim.
During the Second World War , a dummy airport was set up in Hepbach in order to divert enemy bombers from the nearby "Abnahmeplatz Oberraderach". From the beginning of May 1942 extensive, partly underground production and test facilities for the production of rocket and engine parts for Unit 4 were built here by prisoners of war, Russian forced laborers and prisoners from the Friedrichshafen satellite camp . During this time there was an influx of war refugees in Hepbach.
The petroleum age began in the district in 1960/1961: Wintershall AG had plans to develop the suspected natural gas and oil deposits in the molasse basin of the southern German Alpine foothills. Around 50 employees from northern Germany came to the town for the exploration or exploration drilling. For four years, drilling for crude oil was carried out at three drilling sites in the Hepbacher-Leimbacher Ried. The drill bits penetrated around 2500 meters to extract the crude oil and natural gas stored in the sandstone layers. Between Hepbach and Unterteuringen you encountered oil, in the Hepbacher district Pfannenstiel you encountered natural gas. However, in contrast to the one in Upper Linzgau, this deposit turned out to be too small to be profitable in the long term. The drilling rigs were dismantled, but the poisonous sludge remained: several interconnected sludge pits near the railway line between the Wagner company and Lipbach, which were secured with barbed wire and which, according to the District Office's Office for Water and Soil Protection, never posed a threat. However, significantly increased mineral oil contents have been detected.
As part of the community reform , the formerly independent community of Riedheim was incorporated into the town of Markdorf with effect from March 1, 1972.
religion
From a church perspective, Hepbach was a branch to the parish of Oberteuringen until 1837 and to the parish of Bergheim until 1858 . Between 1858 and 1865, however, Hepbach was already a curate , and since 1866 its own parish. Today the Roman Catholic parish of St. Sigismund Hepbach belongs to the Markdorf pastoral care unit.
Residents
Hepbach has 585 inhabitants (as of May 2015).
Culture and sights
Buildings
- The Catholic parish church of St. Sigismund is on the site of a previous building. This first chapel was probably built in the 14th century, but was later destroyed in the Thirty Years War (1618 to 1648) and later rebuilt. The old chapel was demolished in 1853 and replaced by today's parish church, the cemetery was built a few years earlier. The parish church's furnishings include two stone reliefs by Hans Morinck , created in 1590/94 for the Petershausen monastery , as well as a four-part bell, the Sigismund bell being cast in 1692.
- Next door, at Hepbacher Straße 18 and 22 respectively, you will find the old rectory and the former school . This, including a small hall, was built for the Hepbach local administration in 1862, but closed again in 1973 because all the children went to the Markdorf elementary school. In 1979 the building was sold in private ownership.
- Other recent sacral buildings in Hepbach are the Wegkapelle and the cemetery chapel .
- The old fire station was renovated.
Others
- From the five-country view , if the visibility is good, the hiker has the opportunity to see Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein and France in addition to Germany.
- The Upper Swabian Way of St. James leads past Hepbach from Ulm to Constance and winds its way through the Hepbacher-Leimbacher Ried .

Economy and Infrastructure
Hepbach was electrified in 1927 and channeled in the 1990s.
