Möggenweiler is a district of Markdorf in the Lake Constance district of Baden-Württemberg in Germany .

geography

Möggenweiler is located to the east on the edge of the Markdorf city center directly below the Gehrenberg .

history

Möggenweiler is one of the oldest grown districts of Markdorf. The place is first mentioned in writing as Megenwiler in 1304 and 1327 as Megenwiller , when vineyards in Megenwiller were listed in the income of the Weißenau monastery. The name "Möggenweiler" can be interpreted as the hamlet of Mögo .

In 1483 Möggenweiler was subordinate to the Bailiwick of Markdorf . In 1511 there was a devastating fire, which Möggenweiler fell completely victim to. In 1577, the residents of Markdorf, Möggenweiler and Bergheim were contractually obliged by the Bishop of Constance to maintain the Markdorf – Ravensburg road “beyond the customs house to the junction to Teuringen and Hepbach ”. To compensate for the road construction burden, they were exempted from road tolls. The Möggenweiler archive ends with the annual entry 1625.

In 1787 and 1794 the Möggenweiler community forest was distributed over the 16 farms. Each farm was given a small, mostly towel-like strip of the respective prize.

Around 1900 the water supply in the town of Markdorf was so poor that the local council decided to lay a six-kilometer water pipe from Harresheim to Möggenweiler and to have a water reservoir built there, which was inaugurated in 1908, and in 1904 Möggenweiler was connected to the public water supply. The connection to electricity and telephone took place in 1921. The telephone connection in the Gasthaus Paradies served as a public telephone for a long time. In 1959 the streets in Möggenweiler were paved and in 1966 street names were given. Today there are six streets: Buchenweg, Eichenweg, Hochwaldstraße, Paradiesweg, Möggenweilerstraße and Anton-Reichle-Straße. The latter was named in 1966 after Anton Reichle, a member of the Albverein at the time, who was very committed to the repair of hiking trails.

The village character of the grown townscape was once shaped by agriculture, today Möggenweiler is a very popular residential area without any notable business.

religion

Möggenweiler was a branch of the parish of Bermatingen until 1448. Möggenweiler was separated from the mother church in Bermatingen and placed under the parish church of Markdorf “because of the long and sometimes unsafe path in warfare”.

Population development

If Möggenweiler 1549/50 had 24 houses according to a list of residents in the town of Markdorf, according to the Waste Management Office there were 68 households with 172 residents in 2015, 85 of whom were male and 87 were female (as of March 1, 2015). The population is composed partly of very long-established families, partly of newcomers.

Buildings

  • The St. Wolfgang chapel on Möggenweilerstraße probably dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. The oldest evidence dates from 1450, there is an entry from 1543 in the documents of the Markdorf City Archives. The Wolfgang chapel was consecrated to “Our Lady” by 1700. The late-Gothic, plastered hall building with a long choir and roof turret as well as pieces of equipment from several centuries is listed. It was changed in the 17th century and around 1900. From 1705 the bell of the chapel called people to prayer in the morning, at noon and in the evening. In 1980 a new platform was installed, benches from the parish church were installed and the inner plinth was newly plastered and painted. The chapel has been known as a Marian pilgrimage site for generations.
  • The historic water reservoir was built between 1903 and 1904.
  • The village fountain has been standing since at least 1945, if not earlier.
