antiquity

A Roman settlement in the municipality is proven by an excavation by the archaeologist Gerhard Bersu , who uncovered the remains of a Roman thermal bath building near Betznau at the beginning of the 20th century .

The Alemanni distributed around the year 350 n. Chr. The Romans by force of arms from the country, destroyed the Roman possessions and established their own settlements, were subjected to it to 550 by the Franks.

middle Ages

The earliest written mention of the district of Retterschen dates back to 799 in a document from the St. Gallen monastery . Hemigkofen is mentioned in 813. The name of the neighboring hamlet Kalkähren is derived by some researchers from the Latin "Calcaria".

In the High Middle Ages from 1143, the Count Palatine of Tübingen , who later called themselves Montfort , took control of the Argengau .

Early modern age

In 1616 there was a church land consolidation with the parish of Wasserburg ; Nonnenhorn , which until then belonged to Gattnau , was handed over to Wasserburg and Berg changed parish from Wasserburg to Gattnau.

The current municipal area belonged to the domain of the Counts of Montfort until 1780, when they had to cede their goods to the Austrian foothills . During the time of Napoleon Bonaparte there were two changes of nationality. With the Peace of Pressburg in 1806, the area fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria .

Württemberg time

In 1810 the localities came to the Kingdom of Württemberg on the basis of the border treaty of 1810 and were assigned to the Tettnang District Office.

Retterschen had now become the southernmost town in Württemberg .

Nonnenbach belonged to Hemigkofen until 1822, before it was independent again until 1934.

Nazi era

Today's Kressbronn was created on the initiative of Nazi lawyer Hermann Cuhorst , during the Nazi era in Württemberg with the unification of the offices of Hemigkofen and Nonnenbach in 1934 . Hemigkofen had its center around the “Löwen” inn and extended north of the connection between Tettnanger Strasse and Hauptstrasse (to the “Krone” inn) and the Nonnenbach. To the south of it, around the “Engel” inn, the community of Nonnenbach extended with its suburbs Tunau, Retterschen, Gohren and Kreßbronn (originally a group of houses on the Schiffslände and Bodan shipyard ).

In 1938 Kressbronn was assigned to the Friedrichshafen district .

post war period

In 1945, the place became part of the French occupation zone and was thus assigned to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern , which was added to the administrative district of Südwürttemberg-Hohenzollern of Baden-Württemberg in 1952 .

Between 1966 and 1969, then Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger invited members of his cabinet and the CDU / CSU and SPD parliamentary groups to the “Am Egg” house to discuss current government policy issues. The Chancellor also spent his private holidays here. These discussions at Kiesinger were circulated in the then federal capital Bonn under the name "Kressbronner Kreis". At these meetings, for example, the emergency laws are said to have been discussed as well as the Ostpolitik that Willy Brandt later pursued.

Today's lido was opened in 1972.

In 1973 there was the district reform in Baden-Württemberg , when Kressbronn became part of the Lake Constance district.

21st century

In 2001 the redesigned town center with town hall, library and town hall fountain was inaugurated. In 2009 the community celebrated its 75th anniversary. On this occasion, events related to the anniversary were celebrated throughout the year. Among other things, Kressbronn took part in the Entente Florale Germany competition with the motto “Kressbronn blooms” . Participation should also encourage citizens to improve the quality of life in the lake community. The intensive commitment was awarded the silver medal, which was presented by the Federal Minister of Agriculture Ilse Aigner .

Museum in the Schlössle

Kressbronn "Schlössle"

In the idyllic Schlössle Park with old trees and bandstand , the 1829 built is Schlössle . During the summer months, the floating works of art by the local boat builder and artist Ivan Trtanj can be viewed in the renovated rooms on the ground floor . In over thirty years, Ivan Trtanj has created magnificent ships of the 18th century that are true to the original and detailed. 15 ship models in the exhibition were painstakingly crafted according to original plans, some of which come from European museums and archives. Pleasure ships and barques of the European royal houses from the Baroque and Rococo are among the artist's favorite models. In addition to the legendary Bounty , models of the Lake Constance cargo ship Segner and the Schebecke, a three-masted sailor from the Mediterranean region, are among the ship models. All models offer an insight into the life of the ship's crew and the nobles of those times who were carried on them.

The Kressbronn family meeting place has been on the upper floor since December 2006 . The community of Kressbronn has created a family-friendly meeting place here in cooperation with the youth welfare office of the Lake Constance district.

In the Haus des Gastes in der Lände there is a museum, a gallery with changing exhibitions and a café.

Former farmer's and mayor's farm in Milz

Spleen yard

In the district of Retterschen an insight into the history and development of agriculture is given. At the original location, a typical former farm of the region has been preserved in rare completeness and originality, which is part of guided tours or events of the Association for the Preservation of Hofanlage Milz e. V. can be visited.

The history of the courtyard can be traced back to the beginning of the community's history around the year 800: At that time, the St. Gallen monastery acquired property in Retterschen. Today four buildings from three centuries give an impressive insight into the life of our ancestors: the main house (1855/75) with living rooms and stables, barn (1717), remise (1803) and back house (1705). The living quarters were built in 1855 by the mayor of the community at that time and equipped with an office in which the community administration had its seat until 1870. It was named " Monument of the Month September 2005" by the Monument Foundation Baden-Württemberg .

Chapels from the baroque period
Eligius Chapel on Rathausplatz

In 1663 the chapel built at the intersection between Nonnenbach and Hemigkofen had to be rededicated as a result of the Thirty Years War . Around 1710 she could by a foundation of Count Anton III. by Montfort and his wife, before it was given its baroque appearance in 1748 with a hexagonal onion dome. In 1871 a pillar roof was added over the entrance door and in 1992–1995 the lead glazing, the roof and the outer facade with a sundial painted on in 1780 were renovated; Since then, the Eligius Chapel ( Eligius , Latin for "the chosen one", is the patron saint of wagons, blacksmiths, metal workers and horses) has had its current appearance. The chapel has served as a memorial for fallen soldiers since the mid-1950s: inside, four steles are dedicated to the victims of the First World War and twelve steles are dedicated to the victims of the Second World War.

Assumption Chapel in the Schleinsee district

The Chapel of St. Mary was built in just 100 days after the foundation stone was laid on July 18, 1737. It was donated together with the chaplain by Johann Melchior Sauter (born in Schleinsee), who at the time was 51 years old and was the dean of the Lindau regional chapter in Wasserburg . The final consecration took place by the Konstanz Auxiliary Bishop Franz Karl Joseph von Fugger-Glött on July 7th, 1746. The architecture of the chapel building reflects the formal language and theme of the Baroque. Inside, the altarpieces, framed by figures of Saints John of Nepomuk and Franz Xavier , show an ascension in the choir and on the side altars the adoration of the kings and the Holy Family. The chapel comes into focus every year on August 15, when the patronage is celebrated there for the Assumption of Mary .

Sebastian Chapel in the Betznau district

The Sebastian Chapel was built in 1600 by Count Johann III. Donated by Montfort . It found its place on the old country road from Lindau to Tettnang. The year 1696 affixed above the entrance portal indicates an extension (tower construction) and renovation. The interior of the single-nave rectangular building with a retracted choir closed on three sides is rather simple; this may have something to do with the fact that the chapel has repeatedly been the target of art thieves. The ceiling painting with the holy family (H. Siebenrock, 1906) and the glass window picture in the center of the choir are eye-catchers. Two bells hang in the tower: the weather bell is dedicated to the Holy Trinity , the second, cast in 1617, to Saint Sebastian (= the Sublime) and Philip . The Holy Mass on Sebastian's Day (January 20) is very popular.

St. Josef's Chapel in the Tunau district

Count Hugo XVIII. von Montfort was the client for the construction of the Tunau chapel. It was consecrated in honor of Saints Joseph and Joachim on October 17, 1659. On December 15, 1716, the St. Joseph Brotherhood was established and the keeping of the Holy of Holies in the church began. Twelve years later, a chaplain's house was added as a foundation by Countess Maria Anna Leopoldine von Montfort (née von Thun ). On the ceiling you can admire a painting depicting the death of St. Joseph. For a long time the chapel and chaplaincy belonged to the parish of St. Martin in Langenargen, but in 1957 they came to the Kressbronn parish of St. Maria - Help of Christians. In 1974 the Josef Chapel was renovated. In addition to the figures of the patron saint of the chapel and a figure of Our Lady, a figure of Mary and a figure of John can also be seen since then.
