Originally around 296 hectares along the Argen in Upper Swabia were declared a nature reserve on December 16, 1997 by ordinance of the Tübingen regional council. It is managed by the State Institute for the Environment, Measurements and Nature Conservation Baden-Württemberg under the protected area number 4.282.
location
The nature reserve mainly comprises the area between the confluence of the Upper and Lower Argen and the mouth of the Argen into Lake Constance , i.e. the course of the river including the steep slopes, alluvial and swamp forests, valleys and flood dams. 235.6 hectares of the area are in the Lake Constance district , 66.9 hectares in the Ravensburg district .
Protection purpose
Preservation and care of the near-natural Argental is primarily described as a protective purpose. Below Gießenbrücke there are in particular the river bed and the riparian strips, the flood dams, alluvial and swamp forests, silting ponds , bogs and swamps , adjacent reed beds , litter and wet meadows with irises and orchids , wet meadows rich in sedge and rushes, orchards and remnants of the Argen estuary to call. Above Gießenbrücke, the river bed with its predominantly gravel banks and gravel banks, the near-natural alluvial forests, an alluvial forest island, natural swamp and swamp forests, bogs and swamps, spring areas, ponds, reed areas and wet meadows as well as numerous unadulterated, natural or near-natural impact, slide and Sliding slopes on the edge of the valley with natural slope forests and the open rock formations described.

Landscape protection areas
In the extended area of the Argen, four areas have been declared landscape protection areas:
- " Argenaue Reutenen " (4.35.002; 11 ha) in the area of the municipality of Langenargen
- " Steep edge and gravel field of the Argental south of the Kochermühle " (4.35.005; 13 ha) in the area of the municipality of Kressbronn on Lake Constance
- " Lake district and hill country south of the Argen and Nonnenbachtal " (4.35.034; <968 ha) in the areas of the municipality of Kressbronn and the city of Tettnang
- " Ice Age edges of the Argental with Argenaue " (4.35.040; 1621 ha) in the areas of the municipalities of Kressbronn, Langenargen and Neukirch and the city of Tettnang
