Vegetative characteristics

The Akeleiblättrige meadow rue is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of up to 150 centimeters. The leaves are two to three times pinnate and contain a yellow dye, which was used to dye wool. The leaves are very similar to those of the Columbine .

Generative characteristics

The compact panicle contains numerous blue to light purple (rarely white) flowers. The stamens are numerous and tufted in a ball. They are strikingly colored and take on the function of the display apparatus instead of the bracts ( petals ) . This is unique in the native flora, but can also be found in the Mediterranean area with myrtle , Australian eucalyptus and African acacia . The stamens are thickened. The plant offers pollen instead of nectar and its display device ensures pollination by insects. The flowering period extends from May to June.

The long-stalked fruit is smooth, without ribs, and three-edged winged; it hangs as the fruit ripens.

The Akeleiblättrige meadow rue is diploid with a chromosome number of 2 n = 14.

Occurrence

The Akeleiblättrige meadow rue is widespread in Europe from northern Spain to southern Sweden and across Eastern Europe to East Asia . In Central Europe, the Akeleiblättrige meadow rue occurs mainly in the Alps and pre-Alps . In the Allgäu Alps, it rises in the Tyrolean part of the Gumpensattel on the Rothornspitze up to 2277 m above sea level.

The Akeleiblättrige meadow rue in Central Europe thrives in moist bushes and alluvial forests up to subalpine high herbaceous meadows. It thrives best in nitrogen-rich, alkaline soils . In some areas it is a character type of the Alnetum incanae (Association Alneto-Ulmion), but also occurs in societies of the order Molinietalia, the Association Aegopodion or in the mountains of the Association Adenostylion.

In the German low mountain range and in the Alps, the Akeleiblättrige meadow rue occurs rarely and is therefore one of the plants that need care.

Taxonomy

The scientific name Thalictrum aquilegiifolium was first published in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum .

Folk medicine

It was previously used as a medicinal herb against intermittent fever. Other common names for this type of plant are imperial tea, breast tea and lungwort.
