The Rothornspitze (alternatively also Rothorn) is a 2393 m high grass peak in the Allgäu Alps .
Location and surroundings
It is located in a side ridge of the main ridge of the Allgäu Alps, which extends from the Hornbachspitze over the Großer Krottenkopf to the Jöchelspitze to the south into the Lech Valley . The name of the mountain is derived from the red rock slabs (colored chert ) protruding in the southeast flank .
In its long, eastern ridge, which extends into the Lech Valley, rises the subordinate summit of the Mutte (2187 m).
Ascent
All three ridges of the mountain can be walked without a path for most of the ascent. From the south, a ridge leads from the Rothornjoch over very steep grass slopes to the summit, from the north the mountain from the Gumpensattel via Schrofen can be climbed with alpine difficulty UIAA I and from the east, trails branching off from the Lechtaler Panoramaweg lead to the summit. On all routes is surefootedness required.
