Võisiku Manor

Võisiku (German Woiseck ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian rural community Põltsamaa in Jõgeva County . It has 436 inhabitants (as of 2006). Võisiku is located about five kilometers southwest of the city of Põltsamaa ( Oberpahlen ).

history

The place originally belonged to the rule of the Põltsamaa Order Castle. The Võisiku Manor was first mentioned in 1558. In the same year local farmers burned the manor house in connection with the Livonian War (1558–1583). It was not rebuilt until 1632. At that time it belonged to the Kolga-Jaani parish in Viljandi County .

From 1583 to 1919 Võisiku belonged successively to important Baltic German families (von Fick, von Dücker , von Bock , von Manteuffel , von Samson-Himmelstjerna , von zur Mühlen ). The best-known owner was Timotheus Eberhard von Bock (1787–1836), who was initially a friend of Tsar Alexander I of Russia , but was later imprisoned as an opponent of the regime. He is buried in the Kundrussaare cemetery about 1.5 km west of Võisiku. In the 19th century, numerous businesses were established around the manor: a schnapps distillery, a sawmill, a glass and brick factory, cheese-making facilities and a dairy.

In 1920 the manor house was expropriated by the Estonian state, which established a home there in 1925. Today the Võisiku Manor houses a nursing home for 400 mentally handicapped people. The house is surrounded by a two hectare park.
