The Great Krottenkopf in Tyrol ( Austria ) is 2656 m above sea level. A. the highest mountain in the Allgäu Alps . It belongs to a branch of the Hornbach chain , which extends from the Allgäu main ridge about 15 km to the east.
Support points and routes for ascent
- From Oberstdorf ( 815 m above sea level ) you can reach the Kemptner Hut at 1844 m above sea level via Spielmannsau . NN via the European long-distance hiking trail E 5 in four hours.
- The Kemptner Hütte is the northern base for an ascent of the Krottenkopf via the normal route (easiest ascent). The path leads from the hut first south, then east to the Obere Mädelejoch ( 2033 m above sea level ) on the state border between Germany and Austria, then to the Krottenkopfscharte ( 2350 m above sea level ) over scree from the west and the numerous red dots, easy climbing in the following difficulty UIAA I through rubble-covered plates to the summit in just under three hours, although surefootedness and in the summit area head for heights are required.
- A path also leads from Holzgau ( 1103 m above sea level ) in the upper Lech Valley to the Großer Krottenkopf. Path E 5 through the Höhenbachtal towards the north leads past the Simms waterfall (with a snack station ) on to the Untere Roßgumpenalpe . Shortly below the lower Mädelejoch the path branches off to the Krottenkopfscharte . The walking time for this tour is just under four hours.
- Alternatively, the ascent can also be made from the Bernhardseck Hut ( 1802 m above sea level ), past the Mutte and the Strahlkopf ( 2388 m above sea level ), from the Hermann von Barth Hut through the Hermannskar or from Elbigenalp in the Lechtal over the Bernhardstal.
- The north ridge offers a climbing tour. There are two short and one longer, vertical passages of difficulty UIAA III to be mastered. The starting point is the Hermannskarscharte, which can be reached without a path from the Kemptner Hütte through the Öfner Kar.
