Holzgau is a municipality with 401 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Reutte district in Tyrol ( Austria ). The community is located in the judicial district of Reutte .
geography
The clustered village of Holzgau is located in the Lech Valley on the alluvial cone of the Höhenbach . The municipality extends to the main ridge of the Allgäu Alps with the ( Krottenkopf ) 2656 m above sea level. A. as the highest point.

history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1315 as Holzge, later Holzgaw, which means woody or wooded meadow. In 1401 he was made a parish.
The richly decorated facades of the houses, some of which have been renovated in the last few decades, bear witness to the trade relations of the residents in the past centuries. A local museum gives an insight into the life of previous generations in the upper Lech Valley.

tourism
The Simms waterfall was artificially created at the end of the 19th century by the Englishman Frederick R. Simms , who settled in Holzgau as a hunting guest. The place is on the European long-distance hiking trail E5 and is the starting point for mountain tours in the Allgäu Alps and the Lechtal Alps . In addition to its importance as a two-season tourist municipality, there are many out-commuters.
On June 15, 2012 the longest and highest suspension bridge in Austria was inaugurated above Holzgau .
