Berwang is a municipality with 586 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Reutte district in Tyrol ( Austria ). Districts are Brand, Bichlbächle, Gröben, Kleinstockach, Mitteregg , Rinnen , Tal. The community is located in the judicial district of Reutte .

geography

The cluster village is located on the slope of the hilltop that connects the Berwanger valley (to be reached from Bichlbach ) with the Rotlechtal . Kleinstockach and Bichlbächle are mountain farming areas in the Berwanger Valley. Brand, Mitteregg and Rinnen are in the Rotlechtal.

history

The place name is derived from ber (bear) and wang (meadow). The place was settled from Imst and came to Tyrol in 1266, but remained administratively with Imst. From 1430 it was under the jurisdiction of Ehrenberg (near Reutte ). In 1949 the first ski lift went into operation in Berwang . By the tourism , the structure of the formerly poor community changed, many farms were abandoned.

coat of arms

The municipal coat of arms, awarded in 1955, shows an upright black bear on a green shield base in silver . As a talking coat of arms, it symbolizes  the place name ("Bärenwiese").

  • Catholic parish church Berwang hl. James the Elder with first origins from 1430
  • Pension Bergheim in Berwang, planned and built by the architect Siegfried Mazagg in 1932, with very successful restoration and conversion since 2015
  • Village fountain in Berwang from 1988/89
  • the branch churches in the villages of Bichlbächle (18th century) and Kleinstockach (19th century)

Berwang is connected via the Berwang-Namloser Straße (L 21), which branches off the Fernpassstraße (B 179) in Bichlbach and leads over Berwang and Namlos into the Lechtal, where it joins  the Lechtalstraße (B 198) at Stanzach . About 5 km away in the municipality of Bichlbach is the Bichlbach-Berwang train station of  the Ausserfernbahn .
