history

The name is derived from Eelbigen Alp = "elmige Alpe", ie "Alpe covered with elms". Elbigenalp was first mentioned in a document in 1312. Since then, the place has been the political and ecclesiastical center of a large parish in the Lech Valley. Elbigenalp is also known for its houses with fresco and stucco work , which are reminiscent of the bricklayers and plasterers who were also active abroad. There were also prominent visitors: Queen Marie of Bavaria and her sons stayed at Dengelhaus frequently in the summer between 1865 and 1887.

Culture and sights

  • Catholic parish church Elbigenalp : The parish church stands in an open field and is surrounded by a cemetery with two chapels.
  • Mount of Olives Chapel St. Cross north of the village on a ledge
  • Chapel of St. Sebastian in Griesau
  • Chapel of St. Anna in Obergrünau
  • Chapel of St. Josef in Untergrünau
  • Museum with the estate of the lithographer Anton Falger in the municipal office. The painter, engraver and lithographer Anton Falger, who comes from Elbigenalp, painted two dance cycles for his hometown.
  • The first is a panel painting (108 × 272 cm) composed of 18 wooden panels and framed, which today hangs on the east wall of the chapel above the stairs to the ossuary; the doomed person is named on the wooden frame of each panel and the dialogue with death is written down. Some panels are signed, some are dated to 1840. Because it is the main work of the artist, the people involved should be named: Pope, king, artist, judge, citizen, soldier, child, mother, doctor, boy, bride, grandmother, farmer, rich man, beggar, murderer, maid , Grave digger.
  • The second dance of death consists of 14 individual pictures, which are painted in pairs in 7 wall niches on the plaster; the scenes with the citizen, boy, grandmother and murderer are missing here. The artist has consciously taken up the tradition of the dance of death on the cemetery wall. Signatures or dates are no longer visible; the time of origin must be before 1876.
