history

The name of the place is derived from Ayterwanch , which means nettle meadow . The place, first mentioned in 1288 , was popular for its abundance of fish in Lake Heiterwang. The fishing rights changed hands several times. Due to its location on the road to the Fernpass and Reschenpass , Heiterwang gained a certain importance as a transhipment point.

coat of arms

Blazon : In a shield split by gold and black with a wavy cut, two left-facing fish on the right, a nettle in confused colors on the left.

The municipal coat of arms, awarded in 1970, symbolizes the place name with the nettle and refers to Lake Heiterwang with the fish.

Culture and sights

Catholic Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

The parish church of Our Lady goes back to a chapel from the 14th century. A Church of Our Lady was mentioned in 1423, built between 1480 and 1490, probably by Hans Räffl. In the Schmalkaldic War , large parts of the church were destroyed, the chancel and tower were in any case receive. The nave was rebuilt in the 16th century. A complete restoration took place around 1750. More followed in the 20th century.
