Engelbert Kolp
Engelbert Kolp (born October 28, 1840 in Flirsch , † August 21, 1877 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian sculptor .
Life
The farmer's son, born in Flirsch im Stanzer Tal , grew up in Holzgau im Lechtal after the family moved . He showed a talent for carving and received his first training with the lithographer and draftsman Anton Falger in Elbigenalp . In 1860 he moved to Munich , where he first worked in the workshop of Anselm Sickinger and from November 1863 studied with Joseph Knabl and Max von Widnmann at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts . In 1866 he founded his own studio in Munich, in which he later employed several employees. He mainly created religious sculptures in the style of the late Nazarene for churches in Bavaria and Tyrol , but also beyond. Johann Piger and Josef Ignaz Sattler were among his students . Kolp was a member of the Association for Christian Art in Munich.
On October 18, 1874, he married Anna Pembaur, the sister of the music director Josef Pembaur, in Innsbruck . Their son Paul Vinzenz was born in 1875 and died in 1877 at the age of one and three quarters. Engelbert Kolp fell seriously ill in the autumn of 1876 and retired to the low mountain range near Innsbruck to relax . On August 21, 1877, he died of tuberculosis at the age of 36 .
