From 1876 Piger was based in the city of Salzburg, where he lived for himself and his family on Bucklreuthstrassehad a villa built with a studio, and he furnished the facade with self-made figurative decorations. Art historical work
In Salzburg, Piger was particularly supported by the St. Peter and Nonnberg Foundations, for which he repeatedly worked. Stylistically, he was close to the movement of the Nazarenes , who sought a synthesis of medieval-old German style elements with the depth of feeling of a Raphael and thus tried to formulate a new way of expressing religious content.
