Joseph Knabl (born July 17, 1819 in Fließ (Tyrol); † November 3, 1881 in Munich ) was an Austrian sculptor and professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.

life and work

Joseph Knabl, the son of a farmer, completed an apprenticeship as a carver with the Imst sculptor Franz Xaver Renn from 1834 to 1837 . He then went to Munich, where he found employment with Joseph Otto Entres and came under the artistic influence of the sculptor Konrad Eberhard , in whose studio he worked for some time. After working as a sculptor in Anselm Sickinger's studio , he went on a study trip to Tyrol, Württemberg and the Rhineland in 1854. In 1856 the Munich Association for the Training of Trades gave him a teaching position at the association's own modeling school. Two years later Joseph Gabriel Mayer appointed him artistic director of the Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt, which he founded . In this position, Knabl created countless models and drawings and gave many of his students employment at the art institute. In 1862 he was appointed to the newly created chair for Christian sculpture at the Munich Royal Art Academy.

His main works in Munich include the “Coronation of Mary” in the high altar of the Frauenkirche and the “Baptism of Christ” for the high altar of the St. Johannes Church in the Haidhausen district .

Knabl was a member of the Munich Association for Christian Art . For his achievements he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit from St. Michael and the Prussian Order of the Crown . The art academies in Munich, Düsseldorf and Vienna made him an honorary member.

The painter Karl Knabl was Joseph Knabl's son.

Appreciation

On the occasion of his 200th birthday, the artist's complete oeuvre will be exhibited in his home town of Fließ. The Museum Association Fließ is responsible for the exhibition.
