Velden is a market in the Lower Bavarian district of Landshut and the seat of the administrative association Velden . In the local Bavarian dialect , the market is also called Voin .

Velden is located on the great Vils and is around 70 kilometers from Munich and around 30 kilometers from Landshut .

history
Until the 18th century
Velden was first mentioned in 773 as the ducal farm "Feldin". Velden presumably existed before 773, but this is not proven by any archaeological findings. The geographical location suggests that the area around Velden was probably already populated at the time when the Vilstal was still covered by primeval forest. Around the 8th century, Velden belonged to Duke Tassilo of the Agilolfinger family . In 788 francs Kaiser, Charlemagne from the last agilofingischen Bavarian Duke Tassilo and made the hitherto independent duchy of Bavaria became a province of the powerful Frankish empire. In 818 the noble Ellanmar had a chapel built next to the Vils. Thus the administrative area of Velden also had a church center.
Around 890 Aspert , the Chancellor of the Frankish King Arnulf, donated the Velden chapel to the Sankt Emmeram monastery in Regensburg . This gave the Bishop of Regensburg an important say in the region. Velden still belonged to the diocese of Freising , but lost its position as a royal court. A document dated August 12, 903 confirms that the son of the emperor Arnulf, Ludwig the child , gave the royal court Velden together with serfs, buildings, bridges, forests and waters to the bishop of Regensburg.
The Wittelsbachers , who had ruled since 1180, tried to expand their territory and power in Velden as well. In 1224 the Wittelsbach family acquired the Bailiwick in Eberspoint. Velden is first mentioned as Hofmark in 1295 . Since 1300 there was also a ducal bailiff in Velden who, on behalf of the district judge in Vilsbiburg, headed the administration and the court of the court in the village. When Velden was raised to the market is still uncertain, as there is no market foundation deed.
The first citizens of Velden are named in a court document from 1394. This is an indication that Velden already had market rights at this time. One can speak of a bourgeois self-government only since 1484. 1498 is the year the first town hall in Velden was built. The stately parish church was built around 1450 and has since been a landmark of the village in the Vilstal valley. Duke Ludwig X. (Bavaria) gave the town the market coat of arms in 1516.
In the 14th and 15th centuries, plague epidemics, the Landshut War of Succession (1503–1505) and the Thirty Years War brought hardship and misery. From June 19-22, 1633, Swedish troops ravaged, looted and devastated the market. Many wounded and dead were to be mourned. Velden was so badly damaged and burned at this time that the place was in a miserable condition in the 19th century.
19th century
In 1830 there were 167 houses in Velden as well as the parish church, the town hall, a benifit house, the schoolhouse, the poor house, six breweries, six distilleries, a wine house, two beer taverns, a brickworks and a grain mill.
In 1865 Velden was struck by a devastating fire disaster. Most of the wooden houses turned to rubble and ashes. After two years of construction, the railway line was handed over to its intended use on Christmas Eve 1898 with the consent of Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria.
20th and 21st centuries
- During the two world wars : Disaster and National Socialism “control” the market. After arduous post-war years in which many refugees and displaced persons had to be accommodated, an upswing followed in the 1960s.
- 1957: The first folk festival is held.
- 1968: Due to unprofitability, passenger traffic on the Velden-Dorfen railway line is stopped.
- From 1967 to 1973: A new school building with a gym and sports field is built.
- 1969: The community center “St. Andreas “is being built for the Protestant fellow citizens.
- 1973: Velden's 1200th anniversary celebration
- 1976: The biological sewage treatment plant goes into operation.
On May 1, 1978, the administrative community Velden (Vils) was formed with the member communities of Velden, Wurmsham and Neufraunhofen .
- 1981: The Velden kindergarten is expanded.
- December 1982: Move into the new town hall in Velden
- 1984 to 1986: Renewal of the water supply with two new deep wells and the new waterworks, as well as the expansion of the supply to the surrounding area in the following years. The community has converted the former Eberspointer school house into a beautiful kindergarten.
- 1991: Conversion of the former district hospital into the St. Vinzenz senior and nursing home by the Red Cross
- 1993: The new sports center of the TSV Velden can be inaugurated with the adjoining leisure and recreation area of the community.
- 1995: Dismantling of the tracks on the Velden – Dorfen railway line. The Vilstal cycle path will then be laid out on the route.
- 2002: The new double sports hall is put into operation.
- 2008: Construction of the fire station .
- 2013: Construction of a day nursery and day-care center
- 2018: New construction of the kindergarten "Am Kornfeld"
- 2019: Completion of parking deck Velden, Jahnstraße
- 2019: Expansion of the "St. Andreas" kindergarten in Eberspoint
Incorporations
On January 1, 1972, the municipality of Babing with Baueröd, Eberlsöd, Eggersgrub, Eichten, Erlach, Futteröd, Giglberg, Haid, Hinteröd, Irreck, Lahn, Nehaid, Oberbabing, Putzenberg, Rimberg, Schlegelsreit, Schöllamühle, Spindlhäusl, Spitzlbach, Stietenöd, Vils, Walding and Willgrub incorporated voluntarily.
On January 1, 1976, the greater part of the dissolved community of Ruprechtsberg (Ruprechtsberg, Asching, Biedenbach, Burg, Erzmannsdorf, Geratsfurth, Glocksberg, Grünzing, Gumpersberg, Hackenkam, Haid, Holzen, Kühloh, Mariaberg, Rothenwald, Rundthal, Schafhausen, See, Straß, Strohhof, Walln) are also added voluntarily.
On May 1, 1978 the municipality of Eberspoint followed with Alteberspoint, Asenreit, Bachmühle, Birnkam, Elling, Forsthof, Haselbach, Lug, Martinsberg, Raffelberg and Reit as well as parts of the municipalities of Vilslern (Untervilslern, Aichelsberg, Bach, Brandholzen (connected with wood), Burghab, Giglberg, Hofbruck, Holzhäuseln, Hub, Marsberg, Mölling, Obervilslern, Ofen, Pfenningsöd, Sattelstatt, Schapfthal, Stockham, Vilssöhl, Zeil), Holzhausen (Schweibach, Weiher), Neufraunhofen (Aign, Atzmannsdorf, Biedersdorf, Bruck, Einäuglmühle, Hackelsberg, Haid, Haideck, Hintelsberg, Kleinvelden, Koralden, Kreuz, Kronwinkel, Viehweid) and Felikumell (Brandstätt, Eglso, Exenberg, Feuchten, Fischbach, Guntersberg, Herrneck (partially), Hinterkobl, Hirschhof, Höhenberg, Irrthal, Kothlehen, Kremshub, Lehen, Leiten, Maierhof, Maiersdorf, Miethal, Moosing, Neunehaid, Oberensbach (Bax), Paulusberg, Pretzkobl, Rothweg, Schmitten, Schurfsöd, Schwarzeck, Schwarzmoos, Seidlthal, Unterensbach (Fang), Wagensberg, Zweifurth).

Eight months after the end of the war, the first municipal elections (municipal council elections) took place in the municipalities of Bavaria on January 27, 1946. In April and May 1946 the first elections for mayors, district administrators and district assemblies followed. In 2006 the 60th anniversary was celebrated.

Municipal council
The municipal council consists of the first mayor and 20 market council members.
The distribution of seats since May 1, 2020 is as follows:

As a result of the 2020 municipal council elections , the proportion of women on the board increased from six to eight. The turnout was 58.0 percent.
mayor
Up to 1806 the market town was administered by a chamberlain, a vice chamberlain, a market clerk, four friends of the council and nine committee members. Thereafter, the administration consisted of an honorary mayor, four councilors and four committee members. Since July 1, 1972, the mayor's office has been a full-time activity. Thus Josef Kerscher ( CSU ) is the first mayor of Velden. From 1996 to 2014 Gerhard Babl ( SPD ) was mayor of the Velden market. He was confirmed in office in the 2008 local elections. The first round of the 2014 local elections did not result in an absolute majority for one of the three candidates. On March 30, 2014, Ludwig Greimel ( Free Voters ) was elected mayor of the Velden market in a runoff election. In the local elections in 2020, Ludwig Greimel was re-elected Mayor of the Velden market

Since 1976 there has been a partnership with the northern Italian municipality of Roana in the province of Veneto. -
In 1986 another partnership was concluded with the French community of Aigrefeuille near the Atlantic coast.
Culture and sights
The market square of Veldens , an L-shaped complex with houses from the 19th century, is under ensemble protection. The former town hall - today's community library - as well as the old smithy on the lower market with its two arcade arches are the architecturally outstanding buildings. 20 bronze sculptures by the hand of Professor Georg Brenninger, who was born in Velden, can be admired on the market square . The parish church of St. Peter was built around 1450 and has a 64 meter high tower. In a disused goods hall of the former and now listed train station there are exhibition rooms on two floors in which regional and national artists show their works.

traffic
Velden is on the federal highway 388 between Munich and Passau . In 1971, the town was one of the first municipalities in Bavaria to move through traffic to a bypass road. The Dorfen – Velden railway line, which was closed in 1994, ran from Velden via Taufkirchen to Dorfen , where there was a connection to the Munich – Mühldorf railway line . After the closure, the route was converted by the three municipalities into a cycle and footpath . The Vilstal cycle path is very popular with cyclists, walkers, runners and inline skaters. Velden benefits from the nearby Munich airport .

In the community there is a lively club life with various activities in the social, cultural and sporting areas. In Velden, a shepherd's dance is performed every seven years during the carnival season. This is based on the Munich Schäfflertanz and was first held in 1908.
In 1983 the Velden community was the location for the popular TV series Irgendwie und Sowieso .
