The community Roana ( Cimbrian : Robaan or Rowaan, German outdated: Rain or Rovan ) is a scattered settlement with 4228 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) on the plateau of Asiago in the province of Vicenza in northeast Italy. It belongs to the German language island of the seven municipalities .

The language island

According to a study from 2012, there are still a few speakers in the Mitteballe (= Mittewald) fraction who use Cimbrian primarily in memory contexts.

In the Cimbrian dialect, the community is called Robaan or Rowaan . In addition to the Italian names, the parliamentary groups also have German names: Camporovere (Cimbrian Camparübe ), Canove (Roan), Cesuna (Ka-Sune), Mezzaselva (Mittebald / Toballe), Roana (Robaan) and Treschè Conca. Although Roana is the main town of the municipality, the seat of the municipality is in the Canove fraction.

history

During the First World War, the front between Austria and Italy ran very close. After this time, the population of the main town decreased steadily from almost 8000 to the beginning of the 80s.

Culture

Interest in the Cimbrian-German tradition has been revived since the 2000s. Since 2006 there has been the Hoga Zait ("High Time"), a festival dedicated to the Cimbrian culture. In 2007 an office was opened dealing with the Cimbrian language and culture.

Attractions

The high stone bridge of Roana (ponte di Roana) was built around 1906 with great technical difficulties, destroyed in the Second World War and then rebuilt. The small artificial lake in the Spilleck district has been attracting bathers since it was developed as a bathing lake.
