Agugliaro ( Venetian : Agujaro , German outdated: Agler ) is a municipality with 1,392 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the northern Italian province of Vicenza . It is located in the Basso Vicentino, near the border with the province of Padua , between the Colli Berici and the Colli Euganei , which belong to Vicenza and Padua respectively.
Surname
The name probably goes back to the Latin Aquilarium , a name that may refer to the abundant presence of water, especially the Bacchiglione , but has also been associated with the eagles (Aquilae).
history
In 1333, a notary registered land purchases for 425 campi in Agugliaro. The Villa Saraceno , which Palladio designed in 1543, was commissioned by Biagio Saraceno from Vicenza . The villa served as a summer residence and estate and replaced an older family estate that existed in 1546. Palladio's new building is mentioned for the first time in 1555.
In 1989 the British Landmark Trust , a private organization for the preservation of historical monuments, bought the villa and had it restored, as did the former farmhouses belonging to the estate. Another family villa, the Palazzo delle Trombe , also dates from the 16th century and is on the opposite side of Via Finale near the crossroads in the village.
In at least one case, the Rettore of Agugliaro was responsible for paying a chaplain of a church visited in 1540 and 1566, the name of which is not mentioned in the sources. The chaplain received 25 ducats. In some maps of the 16th century the place appeared under the name Lagugiaro .
In 1803 174 families with 758 members lived in the village. The current commune was created by amalgamating the Fojascheda commune, which corresponds to today's Località San Marco, and the Agugliaro commune.
