Colli Berici

The Colli Berici (Eng. "Berici Hills") are a wine-growing area in the Veneto region , Italy . The hilly area to the south of Vicenza was better known for its wines than it is today. Since September 20, 1973 the area has enjoyed the status of a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC), which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

Growing area

Cultivation and vinification may be carried out in the province of Vicenza in the following overall municipalities: Albettone , Alonte , Altavilla , Arcugnano , Barbarano Vicentino , Brendola , Castegnero , Grancona , Mossano , Nanto , Orgiano , San Germano dei Berici , Sovizzo , Villaga , Zovencedo ; parts of the following municipalities also belong to the cultivation area: Asigliano Veneto , Campiglia dei Berici , Creazzo , Longare , Lonigo , Montebello Vicentino , Montecchio Maggiore , Montegalda , Montegaldella , Monteviale , Sarego , Sossano and Vicenza .

It is documented that viticulture has been practiced in this area since the 13th century. After a crisis, the region's wines have been on the rise for several years, so the quantities produced are increasing every year. In 2017, 13,503 hectoliters of DOC wine were bottled.

The following types of wine are produced within this appellation:

Blended wines ( Cuvées )
  • Colli Berici Bianco (also as Frizzante , Spumante and Passito ): must consist of at least 50% Garganega grape variety . A maximum of 50% other white grape varieties may be added (individually or together).
  • Colli Berici Spumante (according to the Metodo classico ): must consist of at least 50% Chardonnay grapes. A maximum of 50% Pinot bianco and / or Pinot nero may be added (individually or together).
  • Colli Berici Rosso (also called Novello and "Riserva"): must consist of at least 50% Merlot grapes . A maximum of 50% other red grape varieties may be added (individually or together).
Single-variety wines
  • Colli Berici Barbarano rosso (also called "Riserva" and Spumante): must be made from the red grape variety Tocai rosso , also known locally as "Tai". They come from a single company in the wine-growing region. Barbarano is a sottozona (sub-area).
