Lugana is a wine-growing region in the area south of Lake Garda in the province of Brescia , Lombardy region and partly in the Veneto region , Italy . The wine-growing area includes the entire municipality of Sirmione and parts of the municipalities of Desenzano del Garda , Lonato del Garda , Pozzolengo and Peschiera del Garda .

"Lugana DOC" refers to a dry white wine and a sparkling wine , the Lugana Spumante. These wines have had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1967 , which was last updated on December 22, 2014.

Production regulations

The prescribed main grape variety (at least 90–100%) is Trebbiano di Soave (also called Turbiana or Trebbiano di Lugana ). Other white grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in Lombardy or the Veneto region may be added up to a maximum of 10%. The following periods are prescribed for the wine to mature:

  • Lugana : May be sold no earlier than January 15 of the following year after the harvest
  • Lugana Superiore : Must be aged for at least twelve months from October 1st of the year of production
  • Lugana Riserva : Must be aged for at least 24 months from October 1st of the year of production, of which at least six months in the bottle
  • Lugana Vendemmia Tardiva : Late harvest, must have a ripening period of at least twelve months from October 1st of the year of production

For the Lugana Riserva label, the wine must have at least 12% vol and 17 g / l dry extract.

Lugana Vendemmia Tardiva

  • Color : golden yellow with amber tendencies with aging
  • Smell : intense, pleasant, characteristic
  • Taste : harmonious, velvety, sometimes lovely, full-bodied, with a possible perception of wood
  • Alcohol content : at least 13 percent by volume
  • Total acidity : at least 4.5 g / l
  • Dry extract content : at least 20 g / l

Lugana Spumante

  • Color : golden yellow with amber tendencies with aging
  • Smell : intense, pleasant, characteristic
  • Taste : harmonious, velvety, sometimes lovely, full-bodied, with a possible perception of wood
  • Alcohol content : at least 11.5 percent by volume
  • Residual sugar content : maximum 25 g / l
  • Total acidity : at least 5.5 g / l
  • Dry extract content : at least 15 g / l
