Oltrepò Pavese

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oltrepò Pavese [oltreˈpɔ paˈveːze] is a landscape in Italy , which comprises the area of the province of Pavia south of the Po and northeast of Voghera . It is also the largest wine-growing region in Lombardy . There are white , rosé - and red wines with DOC generates status. The white and rosé wines are also used to produce sparkling wines ( Spumante ) from classic bottle fermentation (Metodo classico), which have DOCG status.

Growing area

The hill country south of Pavia comprises 42 municipalities that lie at the foot of the Ligurian Apennines . The largest town is Voghera . Approved vineyards spread over the municipalities of Borgo Priolo , Borgoratto Mormorolo , Bosnasco , Calvignano , Canevino , Canneto Pavese , Castana , Cecima , Godiasco , Golferenzo , Lirio , Montalto Pavese , Montecalvo Versiggia , Montescano , Montù Beccaria , Mornico Losana , Oliva Gessi , Pietra de 'Giorgi , Rocca de' Giorgi , Rocca Susella , Rovescala , Ruino , San Damiano al Colle , Santa Maria della Versa , Torrazza Coste , Volpara and Zenevredo . In addition, parts of the municipalities of Broni , Casteggio , Cigognola , Codevilla , Corvino San Quirico , Fortunago , Montebello della Battaglia , Montesegale , Ponte Nizza , Redavalle , Retorbido , Rivanazzano Terme , Santa Giuletta , Stradella and Torricella Verzate are also permitted.

The wine-growing area was previously known for large quantities of poor quality. This is favored by the important role of large winegrowers' cooperatives and the small size of the individual holdings. A winemaker owns an average of 1.8 hectares of vineyards. On the other hand, two thirds of the Spätburgunder vineyards grown in Italy , i.e. 3,000 hectares, are in Oltrepò. The Oltrepò is by far the largest growing area for this grape variety in Italy.

generation

In 2017, 118,906 hectoliters of DOC and DOCG wines were produced (including sparkling wine). Considerable quantities of the non-certified grapes are supplied to large Spumante cellars (Cinzano, Gancia, Martini & Rossi) in Piedmont. In addition, larger quantities of barrel wine are delivered to nearby Milan to meet the demand for inexpensive wine.
