Okrug Pirot ( Serbian Пиротски округ Pirotski okrug ) is an administrative district in southeast Serbia , which borders Bulgaria in the east .

According to the 2002 census, this district has a population of 105,654. The region is the center of the Bulgarian minority in Serbia, some of which make up the majority in the border communities. The main administrative seat is the city of Pirot .

  • Roma = 3.344 (3.17%)
  • Remainder = 5.012 (4.74%)

history

The name Pirot was first mentioned on ancient Roman maps in the 2nd century. The sights of this area are the “Church of St. Peter ”from the 13th century and the Poganovo Monastery from the late 14th century.

The medicinal waters of the Zvornjačka Banja spa were discovered in ancient times . The large untouched natural areas of this region are well known in Serbia .

economy

The economic focus of this area is formed by the rubber factory "Tigar", the textile factory "Prvi Maj" and the paint and varnish factory "Suko".
