San Martino della Battaglia is a fraction of the municipality ( comune ) Desenzano del Garda in the province of Brescia ( Lombardy region ) with 1701 inhabitants. Until 1926 the place belonged to the municipality of Rivoltella del Garda .
The place got its current name after the historic Battle of San Martino (June 24th 1859) in the Sardinian War , in which the forces of the Kingdom of Sardinia , led by Vittorio Emanuele II , allied with the French Napoleon III. who defeated Austrians led by Emperor Franz Joseph .

Viticulture
This is where the white and liqueur wines of the same name with protected designation of origin ( DOC ) are produced. The wine must consist of at least 80% Tocai Friulano grapes . A maximum of 20% of other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Lombardy region may be added. The cultivation is authorized in San Martino della Battaglia as well as in the municipalities of Sirmione , Desenzano , Lonato and Pozzolengo in the province of Brescia and in Peschiera del Garda in the province of Verona . The denomination has been around since 1970; it was updated on March 7, 2014.
