Valcalepio

Valcalepio is a wine-growing region for red and white wines in the Italian region of Lombardy . The name means “Valley of Calepio” (the Bergamasque family Calepio once had extensive estates here, which they managed from Castelli Calepio) and refers to an area in the foothills of the Alps between Lake Como and Lake Iseo . The area has had the status of a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC for short) since August 3, 1976 , which was updated on March 7, 2014.

  • The dry white wine Valcalepio Bianco is made from Pinot Bianco and / or Chardonnay (55–80%) and Pinot Grigio (20–45%).
  • The sweet Valcalepio Moscato Passito is made from a single variety of grapes of the Moscato di Scanzo variety, some of which are raisined , and has an alcohol content of 17 percent by volume . This wine is aged in barrel for at least 18 months.
  • The dry red wine Valcalepio Rosso is made from Merlot (40–75%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (25–60%). With an aging of three years and an alcohol content of at least 12.5% ​​by volume, it can be called "Riserva". Simple red wine ages in barrel for at least 12 months.

The vineyards of the Moscato di Scanzo wine-growing area are embedded in the Valcalepio area and have the status of a DOCG .
